What he had was prodigious kicking on both feet.

IMO it’s a hallmark of the best players.

We gotta recruit that way.

I agree with all of that. In those first couple of years he was just amazing – always seemed to be on his own and always in exactly the right place. And a real goal kicker.

After the first few years he came back to the field a bit; I remember at one stage he had problems with his weight and some psychological issues; but then reinvented himself as a centre-half-back. He was far under the size normally required for a key position, but his ability to read play and position himself enabled him to do it, and he was helped by playing in a backline led by Bomba Thompson, and with Wanganeen down there to help out. They functioned as a complete unit, and Harvey at CHB was just one part of it. I think that’s what Rutten is trying to develop with the current lot.

Boris was definitely a favourite of mine. My missus gave me the '93 finals pack DVD a couple of years ago and it includes a season retrospective, with highlights from every game. Boris kicked 50+ goals that year and there was a goal of the week contender pretty much every match. He finished 2nd in the Crichton in 1991 and I’m wondering did he play more as a rover than a small forward that year?

Also, good to see a fair bit of Michael Prior in the centenary game highlights. I really liked him as a player, was unlucky to miss out on our 2000 premiership and his career ended in a pretty crappy way at West Coke.

That was a truly glorious night at the footy.

I loved Darren Bewick for the fact that he played for the two clubs that I’m passionate about, West Perth and Essendon.

Another reason was a story that I remember him telling in an interview once. When the Eagles were accepted into the comp and they were assembling their inaurgural squad they wanted to select him initially but he made sure that he signed a Form Four to join Essendon as he barracked for the club and would rather move to Melbourne and play for our club than stay home and play with the Eagles. He basically got to live out his childhood dream to play for EFC.

And what you saw at AFL level he produced for the mighty Cardies as a teenager in the WAFL before he moved over. He was a gun his entire football career.

That night against Geelong in the Centenary Match was a huge triumph for him.first game backnfrom.a knee injury but bittersweet for the club as we lost Michael Long to the same fate.

Fan since 92 so only took those into account, obviously.

Given the topic is “favourite” and not best then

Neville Fields
Tim Watson
Terry Daniher
Dean Rioli
James Hird

That was difficult, I have another 10 players lined up as 1st emergency.

Lloyd-Lucas were just a great combination. We would of never had the years we had without those two in the same team.

Agree. Close to the best night l have ever had at the footy. Not sure the skydivers were necessary. There was commentary on them for long before we could see them. There was also a legends game prior, with extra points given for a goal from a place kick, IIRC Jezza kicked one to the main scoreboard end, from close in. Rex Hunt was commenting from the wing, strolling up and down the ground, calling over players for a chat as they ran past. That was the last time l saw Jack Clarke, my namesake here on BBlitz. He was on a wing for a while. The game was pure exhibition fun, and the foot and hand skills were still there, probably as you would expect with a total lack of pressure.

I have written before about Bewick’s game that night. He was sensational, and never looked like missing any of his 9 goals, it was the most goals by any player coming back from such a long term injury. l had caught the train in, after the game when l walked back to Richmond station, there were 4 diesel powered trains already there to ferry the Cats fans home. Those trains wouldn’t have left the platform until well after 11, meaning many of their supporters wouldn’t have gotten home before 1AM. All that, and they lost in a cone from behind thriller. A great night for football, especially for Essendon fans.

Damian Peverill (Love this sort of player)
Alan Ezard (Every list should include at least 1 red head)
James Hird (Had his number on my back before he went big. Just knew he would).
Aaron Francis (because I followed him through under 18’s and I refuse to give up on him)
