I never said he was celebrated by athletics authorities at all, it was the athletes at all levels who adored the bloke. I recall back then that the Victorian Amateur Athletics Association was the most conservative and inbred organisation in the country.
Well the athletics people did not get Norman invited to the 2000 Olympic Games or any other significant events, so the general population would not learn about his athletic feats and his humanity. Do some research and you will find that Normanâs story has greater public recognition in America than in Australia. It is telling that Smith and Carlos attended Normanâs funeral.
I remember early newspaper articles about a young kid from the outback who was a promising tennis junior. With her talent realised, she was coached well from her early teens and reached close to her full potential without too much hype in early years.
I just hope this 16 year old sprint sensation does nto become a victim of the internet fame magnifier before he is even an adult. I would love to see him reach his full potential also.
Far out, Iâve just been told to âdo some researchâ!! (I am comfortable that I understand the John Carlos and Tommie Smith story, and the small part that Norman played, and the respect Smith and Carlos had for him plenty well enough)
If you donât understand the difference between âathletics peopleâ and âathletics officialdom and adminstrationâ then Iâm not sure what to say. Thereâs a significant difference between those who might congregate on the back straight at the old Olympic Park to watch the Zatopek, and those who might have been in a position to be involved with formal Olympic ceremonies.
Hopefully everyone letâs him develop. And that he has the right people around him to shield him from those who will want to get their hooks into him to feather their own nests. Iâm sure there will be no shortage of those in the short term.
Again you are misrepresenting the facts of the Peter Norman story. The âgeneral populationâ knew all about his Silver Medal in 1968 and all the Australian success, as there was not that much of it. the Medal presentation was front page on all newspapers of the time.
Donât mix up the snobs on the AOC and slugs at VAAA, with the âgeneral populationâ.
A chance to win cash.
And bring in lots of $$ to the bookies.
lots of 16 year olds compete. His problem would be he would be the back marker, which would be odd for a kid.
Wonder who his manager is. we donât really have a huge crew of sprint stars.
Depends on schooling, but would expect him to qualify to some major events next year. Plus he still has the under 18 & U20 champs etc as well.
Stallwell gift April 19âŚso not a lot of chance he races 4 weeks in a row, would give stallwell the miss and do Maurie Plant meet instead against best in Aus and maybe even international - Fred Kerley was there last year I thinkâŚ
Re the 16yos at Stawell, there was something that came up over the last couple of years about it not being legal to bet on races with U18s. I donât know the full story of that one.
Apparently, Gout Gout is going to the Worldâs in 2025. He will run the 100m in the Juniors and run the 200 in the Open. I wonder if this will happen as he is studying Year 12 in 2025.
If you want to know more about the analysis of GG go to Total Running Productions on You Tube. they are excellent at analysing the sport of athletics.
I stand by my comments that Norman had more recognition in America than in Australia.
he was celebrated in America for his contributions to the Civil rights movement
he was invited to the 2000 Olympics by the USA Track and Field Federation
On the day of his funeral USA Track and Field Federation labelled the day, Peter Norman day
In 2012 CNN aired a documentary. The Third Man; The Forgotten Black Power Hero
he features in a mounument at the National Museum of African American History and culture
It took years after Normanâs death for the Australian Parliament to issue a state apolog, eventually the AOC gave him an Order of Merit and Melbourne erected a statue in 2019. Finally, Normanâs cousin produced a documentary in 2008 titled Salute.
TRP goes a bit too much all out on the hyperbole though. Itâs OK but a bit too much trying to game the algorithm. (Not just about Gout Gout, about anyone. For reference you could check the Matthew Boling videos from a couple of years ago. All the same sorts of hyperbole.)
But still anything that gets Aths attention is a good thing I guess.
