Trade Talk 2019: who should we beat our chest like an ape about now?

Wrong Kelly I think. I reckon they are talking about the Geelong version heading to WCE.

Ah, my mistake, ta.

There’s been articles this week saying Josh Kelly is close to signing a 2 years extension with GWS which will take him out to being a free agent at the end of 2021.

Sounds like he is making most of GWS’ premiership window before he moves back to Melbourne to a club with a open window - that is if he wants to go back home, obviously.

He’s not from Melbourne though… he’s from WA

Was talking about Josh Kelly.

Nick Haynes of GWS is a free agent this year. Possible Ambrose replacement. 193cm 89kg
At 26, gets a game at GWS every week and has played at least 18 games a year for the last 4 years.
Frankston boy, Go home factor?
Needs a haircut though and would have to grow a moustache to play at the Bombers

From GWS web site
Nick Haynes was drafted to the GIANTS with pick seven in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft. The former Dandenong Stingrays forward made his debut in round 10, 2012 playing through the midfield and up forward. Haynes has great agility, takes a good overhead mark and shows very good running and aerobic capacity. A switch to the backline proved a turning point for Haynes who has gone on to cement himself as a key member of the GIANTS’ defence, playing a crucial role in the GIANTS’ three finals campaigns. Prone to injury early in his career, Haynes turned to Pilates to help strengthen his body and has enjoyed the most consistent seasons of his career.

2019

Finally got some luck with his body and played every game last year for the first time in his career, after he’d never previously played more than 19 in a season. It showed on the field, with Haynes’ ability to intercept mark and provide run from defence recognised when he finished fifth in the best and fairest. The athletic backman can play on talls and smalls and is also effective as a loose man in the back 50 where he reads the play brilliantly. Seemingly still underrated outside the GIANTS, another consistent season should see that change in 2019, and if he can clean up his foot skills, he is just about the complete modern-day defender.

Are we still likely to go for Jack Martin in this years trade period?

We certainly won’t be trading for him. We have no currency, unless a solid quality player decides all of a sudden that a trip to the Gold Coast is exactly what their career needs. We might sniff around to see if we can get him as an FA, but that’s very salary cap dependent. We’ve bought a LOT of players into the club over the last two years, and when you poach, you pay overs. I con’t imagine there’s much left in the kitty.
