Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

If Crisp came in 2014 trade period, does it help Hirdy keep his job?

Would have been a better pickup than Cooney and costed less.

Why? How?

I’ll just take it from the horses mouth instead. Paints a pretty different picture.

Even the bloke you’re quoting said it’s murky given the lack of timestamps on the show. Can’t say I watched it myself though, have you?

Regardless, I’m ok with not getting the deal done in 2021 (Though if the haggling was really over a 3rd rounder, we’re talking Alistair Lord or Sam Weideman here). Would have also cost us Hayes though.

My issue is that we told him we’d try again the following year, then completely ghosted him. That’s pretty ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  up.

Only half true.

Yeh future second would be Hayes or Hill.
You probably take Hill

I guess dodoro thinking needed third round for matching for Davey.

He wasn’t the missing piece for a premiership though.

The ghosting thing does sound bad. We only getting one side of the story though.

What changed though - we got Brad Scott in 2022, that was october and shouldn;t ahve stopped contact throughout the year.

Maybe it was Rutten who was keen on bringing in Hill and Scott was less Keen. Plus Davey’s and Munkara were arriving.

We didnt get him becuase Dodo refused to give up 3rd as well lols

Thank god he’s gone where he cant fark up anymore

Retrospectively, yes. But Hill had done nothing when we were talking to GWS

The Lachie Neale trade; picks 6, 19 and 55 in exchange for Lachie Neale and pick 30.

What a trade by the Lions! We’re all talking about 2, potentially 3 first rounders for Harley :eyes:

I’ve been thinking how many good players, maybe even better than good, have been traded in for peanuts. It’s remarkable how many there are.
So i just had a quick look through this round’s teams, (plus injury lists). I haven’t bothered looking up the specifics of the trades, but from memory all the below were ā€œcheapā€ - as in 2nd rounders or cheaper in many cases.
Key backs - May, Lever, McGovern, Battle, Allir, Lobb, Howard, Battle.
HB/Small defender - Amon, Baker, Noble, Zorko, Clark, Haynes
Wing - Langdon, Acres, Hollands, D’Ambrosio, Duursma
HF/Small forward - Stengle, Hill, Cameron
KP forward - Hogan, Wright, McStay
Ruck - Cameron, Meek, Nankervis, Grundy, Witts
Onballers - Hewett, Macrae, Cerra, Caldwell, Taranto, Hopper, Steele, Ward, Dawson, Bedford, Treloar

I’ve left out high profile and costly trades like Dangerfield, Cameron, Horne-Francis, Jackson, Lynch, Neale, Bolton.

It’s unbelievable how many good players in there who came cheap.

Agree with your overall thoughts, but your first 2 examples (May and Lever) cost pick 6 and 10 respectively

Lever was 10 and another first round pick.

And Battle listed twice but was a FA

Yeah, I knew there’d be a few I didn’t recall that well. No doubt quite a few second rounders, and some complicated ones where they’re part of a complicated multi club/mult player trade so the cost is not clear cut, and a few via free agency (the ultimate cheapie).

The ones that stand out to me are Lever and May as mentioned, Taranto (2 first rounders), and Cerra (pick 6?). Taranto and Cerra trades happened very quickly and with minimal fuss, so I get how as an Essendon fan you’d assume nothing of high value was traded, because at Essendon it’s not really a high value trade unless in happens with 30 seconds to go after weeks of public fighting.

I’m pretty sure Zorko, Hollands (winger), are single club players, and Taranto, Hopper, and others weren’t cheap either.

Reid please.

Gimme that big bull rollicking his way through that Sydney midfield in the 2nd half.

We need it.

Starting to come around to the H Reid mega trade play.

Thought we had too many gaps so needed to hold draft picks this year… but with:

  1. Some of the young ā€œpotentialā€ showing performance (Reid, Roberts, Caddy looking good and Perkins, SEH, Hayes, Kako looking credible)

  2. Solid older core

Might come down to if 2025 NGA’s keep building … if do, we’ll have enough talent making Harley the star power to compliment Merret.

If we don’t use our draft leverage this year, Harley will likely go to cats or hawks (cheaper) when off contract next year.

Be good if WC can push Harley to pick Essendon

Its looking like we are going to be bringing in 2 really solid academy players this draft, and then Bewicks son in a year or 2?
I think now is absolutely the time for us to be going for a big fish with draft picks as long as they fit the age profile.

I dont recon we are that far off from a top 4 challenge.
We are a young side with young talent who just needs to get experience together and keep playing. Our best footy can match it with just about anyone, we just cant produce it for long enough yet.

The Spine is looking great for the next 5 years.

Reid Hayes Roberts
Caldwell, Durham, Martin
Caddy and Kako

Thats just some of our younger guys who will only get better and will be at the club for the next 7+ years. And all of those players have potential to be A graders in the league, some of them already are.

That forward line has a nice Gerreyn shaped hole in it.
