Trade talk - from October 2025 (Part 10)

Getting 2 firsts (even late-ish ones) for a 31 year old guy who has dialled it in for a year with a year to run on his contract is absolute fantasy land stuff.

I guess it depends on how set Zach is on the Hawks and how set the Hawks are on him.

Everything I’ve heard is that Zac and Mitchell still want this to happen but will either party be prepared to wait another year if need be?

The way he’s performing this season, we’ll be lucky to get a first rounder for him

Their second next year is effectively a third rounder.

Last year’s offer will be much better than what we get now. Damn I hate this club sometimes.

Ahh ok yeah I get you

That’s trading 101.

Make the most of your opportunities.

If someone is in form, and requests a trade…… you have excellent leverage.

If Merrett has a poor year (which he is having), then he’s worth a packet of chips.

Declining trade value. For three reasons.

Your asset is a year more advanced in age, a year closer to being out of contract and as you quite rightly elude to, unlikely to play at the high level he usually does when he’s been held against his will and the team performance is terrible and depressing.

Which was always something that people with wise heads would have assessed when contemplating the offer last trade period.

Wise heads though aren’t in great supply inside our club though unfortunately.

I also don’t think Hawthorn would be as keen as they were last year. I think they will almost certainly go in for Butters and if he shows any interest in them it would be curtains for any deal for Merrett! If that were to eventuate and given he doesn’t want to leave Victoria I wonder if Geelong would have a crack? He is from Colac too…Geelong have all their picks intact as well.

The firsts they will offer us are effectively second round picks. I’d say there is zero chance we accept anything less than that

Yep, which if i’m Hawthorn I pony up this year and get it done.

Getting cute and waiting another year to get him for effectively free opens up the exact same opportunity for the 16 other clubs to woo him.

We need like a mediator third party team to trade a player to us in exchange for Merrett to Hawks and one of theirs or a pick to the third party.

You do realise Hawk’s first this year is more likely to move forward, or stay about the same spot, than to move back?

This is the problem with people arguing about things they don’t actually know. Unfortunately, I suspect EFC list management is in the same position.

No picks just straight swap for Calsher Dear done

Can always implore them to make something happen to get a half decent first round pick for the deal

I look back at the trade for Jack Gunston with Brisbane. He was 31 at the time of the trade, and Hawks gave back Brandon Ryan, pick 39 and 54, and a future fourth round pick, with an exchange of Gunston and picks 47 and 61, and a future second round pick. Don’t expect any trade for Merrett to Hawks be as easy as a first and second rounder.

Religious people have been doing that for centuries.

They don’t see any problem.

Who

Think he’ll get better offers than 222k a year

Gunston was getting dropped from the Brisbane side and wanted to return back to victoria.
As would have otherwise been relegated to the VFL.

Merrett is still our best player, or at least top 3.

Yeah but also an All Australian’s under his belt, BNF, two time leading goal kicker and also 31-years old at that point. Merrett is still one of our best’s at the moment but being 31-years old is the main point. Hard to see a ridiculous offer for a 31-year old despite him being our best.
