Trade talk - from September 2025 (Part 8)

Crows interested in him and he has supposedly done a medical with them

Dunkley isn’t fast. Neither is Newcombe.

The key is they have to be good defensively and create space for the more nimble guys to transition with less pressure.

The off field intangibles are also a boon

We fell for that 1. Wasn’t a bad player for us young Shane Harvey. Immaturity cost him his career as he went to norf to play all 3 games with his brother.

Regretfully, none of the five possible clubs mentioned in this article are us.

with Eagles extra 4 lost spots, they could sign Guelfi as a DFA, if we paid him out.

Can’t do it “easily”. All comes under the 2025 salary cap if paid out this year and they are paid as if they played all 23 games for the 2026 season

Shane Harvey was crap for us and crap for north. Our first selection in the best draft that ever was.

We have already been rebuilding and taking in new talent. We just can’t shed all problematic senior players in the same year. It’s pretty evident that we are breaking up the old guard and it seems to be happening over a three year period. In that same period we are adding a heap of youth.

Have a feeling that Gold Coast will be paying a big price for Petraccca. This will be good for us because it then sets the MINIMUM for Merretts value

I don’t think we should be scared of the Hawkes F1, might be a pick between 14 and 18, but if Gunston has an average year and Chol becomes his true self again they could miss finals. A lot of good sides around.

They will be paying his big contract, they won’t be paying that big of a price.

Yeah ok. Like I said we got sucked in. His attitude sucked that’s why he is not an afl legend but a local league legend.

Were mckay and gresham restricted or un restricted at the time? I cant remember, but yeah if they were restricted we over paid because we wouldt of been forced to trade fron the respecting clubs, offering enough for decent compo for them.

Both restricted.

McKay 1st round, Gresham End of 1st Round

Of course. Assuming their clubs want to keep them and we still wanted the players at some other price. But assuming that the issue is that we were thinking of our salary position as meaningless because we had cap room, rather than fully understanding the implications. Either that or thinking Gresham was going to win us a final!

That 17 disposals, 3 goals in game 8 was the game before he got Essingtoned…..

Either that or recruiting a game who would have grown up absolutely hating your club was probably a bad idea. Especially when their attitude was crp to begin with.

I thought Saints were nuts to bring in TDK at the expense of Marshall but there’s method to their madness. They will get a first round pick for Marshall and they paid overs salarywise for de Koning but without having to trade. So they are essentially using their spare cap to buy picks.

Noone has really answered this anywhere but with the players we have how is it possible for us to be anywhere near our (95%) salary cap? What good is a perpetual war chest when it is never used?

with Merrett leaving, we must be really struggling to hit the cap floor.

I think you can get a year or two of being allowed under, maybe we are in that now? Either way, we will need to spend it soon
