Trade talk - from September 2025 (Part 9)

5 years. Hard to do more recent data because they haven’t had the chance to play 150 games  Old data is also less relevant.

I posted this in the data thread, but here’s the likelihood of a player making the AA squad from 2013 to 2019 by pick range:

  • 1 to 5: 54%
  • 6 to 10: 29%
  • 11 to 15: 23%
  • 16 to 20: 11%
  • 21 to 25: 20%
  • 26 to 30: 26%
  • 31 to 35: 6%

Maybe Hawthorn need to change tact and see if they can get a deal done with Gold Coast for Bailey Humphrey to get to Essendon.

I’m sure Essendon would be more open for Straight player swap for Humphrey.

Hawthorn would probably rather Humphrey.

Should pay out Jones, Edward’s and Gresham too.

I did not have Liam Pickering as the voice of reason on my bingo card but here we are

Sounds like we should keep 21,27 and 30 and not trade up

I’d give them Merrett if they took Scott.

Of all the teams - why Hawthorn?

The way Humphrey’s manager was speaking on radio today, Gold Coast won’t entertain any trade.

I think that is short term thinking sorry. That is our lot and whether Merrett stays or leaves we are a bottom 4 side. That means other clubs will be looking at our talent; that’s modern sport. The club has to sort the off field stuff to help us get better quicker but not trading Merrett because you’re worried about other clubs circling our talent is not the answer. I’d suggest that the other clubs have done this and are doing this already. Naive to think otherwise.

So true. People on here are happy to be trading away proven generational talent who’ll play for another 5 seasons for speculative picks. It’s insane.

Just as many seem to think they’re worthless.
Of course first round picks are valuable. Far from guarantees, but valuable all the same.

That’s just needless fixation on the wrong thing. Clubs can and will enquire about players every year, and it doesn’t matter if they got to a good side as long as we are compensated.

Any player is for sale for the right price. And Zach is for sale at the right price, and 2 firsts is that, let alone more.

Further to that, most here acknowledge that losing Merrett will set us back in the short term but the general belief is that it will allow us to build a good core of players much quicker and help us climb the ladder sooner.

Apples to oranges. Melbourne told it’s members they were contending in 2025. Hence the sacking of Goodwin. We are not promising anything to our members. If we finish last, no one will be shocked.

Perhaps the club is backing itself to be a place Zach wants to stay at in two years time?

He may well play great football for another 5 years.
But even if we don’t trade him, there’s a very good chance that only 1 or 2 of those would be for us.

Sure, he might have a change of heart. But I’d expect a guy that’s apparently looked around pretty much every year to go once he hits UFA. Is 2 years of Merrett worth the difference between whatever Hawthorn offer us and a likely 2nd round pick?

There’s alot to weigh up.

The bloke has disgraced himself and completely disrespected the club, he doesn’t want to be here.

We suck with Zach Merrett, what are we scared of?

Zach asking for a trade again next year is not a terrible outcome. He’s still contracted and we’ll have had a year to prepare for Zach’s exit and can leverage that info to get in the market for a replacement which actually reflects his value rather than speculative future picks etc..
Right now, we can’t attract like for like players of high end talent and it’s a speculative draft. Terrible timing to be negotiating..

The best thing this trade period is not having to listen to Mick Ablett on trade radio this year. The Melbourne death ride may have sent him mad.
