What would we actually prefer for Merrett?

Option A — Melbourne:
Pick 10 + a later sweetener

Option B — Hawthorn:
Pick 15 + 25/26

Option C — Hawthorn:
Pick 15 + future first

Assuming Merrett is going, which return would you take?

For me, the interesting comparison is whether the certainty and higher-end quality of Pick 10 outweighs getting two meaningful assets from Hawthorn.

Hold your horses. You should be proving to the AFL that you have the financial means and cap space to match that contract.

Almost impossible to check. You don’t have to match the annual payments, but only the length and guaranteed amount. Most of these contracts are long enough that theoretically a club could cover them, even if it meant paying out 50% of the cap in the last year.

The AFL are a party to every player contract. So they’d be able to account for how the cap is being spent each year for each club.

I don’t know, but do the clubs need to provide financial statements each year to the head office?

The fact the AFL has the contracts data is meaningless. At any point in time, the majority of players are contracted for 1-4 years. If the FA offer is for five, any club will have a huge amount of free space in years 4-5 simply because other contracts haven’t been extended yet. So, any club could fit it in.
