Whilst I agree entirely I don’t think the recruitment of Caddy, Nankervis and Prestia can be underestimated.
It’s about that weight of number in quality players. Whilst not superstars like Martin and cotchin the add more than just workrate. Both prestia and Caddy add midfield grunt and are both relatively clean and decent ball users. Nankervis is a competitor and provides at least a 50/50 in the ruck.
I think it comes as much about weight of numbers of quality allowing guys like you mentioned to play a lesser part and focus on pressure.
In our case we rely on Fanta, Green and Walla to move up the field and be more than hard running pressure players. They go through the midfield and are required to hit the scoreboard. Mostly because we need them in the rotations in the mid.
Carrying a couple of players this year really effected our ability to play as a unit, we were plugging holes at times. And our quality small forward were used many time to do this.
If we can add some more options through the middle which can either easily replace one of our smalls with pressure and be a forward option, whilst also going through the midfield or 1-2 good midfielder then we will be big improvers.
