Very brief update from this morning’s training in perfect conditions.
short sharp drills based on speed and agility of movement
none of the players were game to stand still. Emphasis on continual movement. No static targets.
boundary stoppages practice - getting numbers to the contest and emphasis on blocking the opposition from both the contest and the ball carrier.
Zaharakis and Carlisle both moved a lot more freely than last week (read what you want into this!). In particular, Carlisle’s movement to contests went up a couple of gears. In one particular contest the ball came in towards full forward with a skewed kick across goal well toward the forward pocket. Buckets made up a lot more ground than I believed he was capable of and marked the ball at waist height with outstretched arms - a top grab! Proceeded to dob the goal from an acute angle.
the squad of those not selected in the 25 then moved to the “Etihad” oval for specialist training.
only player of any concern was Hibberd who joined in drills but then headed into the Hanger. Not sure whether this was a planned “easy” session for him?
In summary, I would be extremely surprised if the endeavour does not improve dramatically this weekend and I would expect that ball movement will be more aggressive and speedier into the forward set up.
colyer went to the “Etihad” oval, during training before the others not selected did , for some type of drill/run throughs but returned to train with the main group.
The Langford was playing as a forward in the practice drills. Was pretty sharp although on one occasion he under-weighted a pass which fell short and put his teammate under the pump.
