Training 20 August

Hirds first task.

Convince Licha to play on and finally win a GF Shane Crawford style battling through his last year.

Not as silly as it may sound.

The talk around the Club this morning was that pre-training, a number of players and staff were in animated conversation with Licha and the door may be a little ajar.

Goddard just being an angry man on the sidelines this week resting up it would seem.

Maybe he's on the footy show tomorrow night and had to miss training to go pick out a suit and comb his hair over?

Reckon it would be highly unlikely.

Not many blokes pull the pin on their career without having a good long think about it and making the decision with their family etc.

From what I gather (imagine) Licha passed the potential peak of his career a few years ago, but he's always wanted to prove to himself how good he could be, and now he knows.

Personally, I feel that retirement i the best thing for Licha, if not for the club. If he is convinced to play on, put his family etc on the back burner for another year, what happens if he cops a back injury or even just a hammy that puts him out for 6 weeks?

Right now he can give it his all without worrying too much if he's going to break down, and enjoy the final games of his career which is something he probably never thought would happen (probably thought his career would be ended by an injury instead).

Agree with your logic Wannabe, however from Essendon's viewpoint with draft penalty impediments still in place, Licha for 10 - 12 games in 2015 sounds a valuable proposition, particularly with his leadership / guidance skills that have been highly beneficial this year.

I also made it training today so thought I would add some comments to compliment Karmabombers.

Firstly there was a ■■■■■■ dressed up as a syringe needle at the start of the session who was thankfully quickly escorted out of the premises. Didn’t really get any reaction other than everyone (I assume) thinking he was a dropkick.

I thought training and the vibe between players was very positive. A lot better than the last time I went to training back in March.

During the goal kicking practice that Karma described above Zac Merret would celebrate his goals with some fist pumps and positive screams. Clearly loves his football and brought a smile to my face.

Also some of the players practiced running in to kick at goal with another player a metre behind chasing them down. At one stage Andy (I think his name is Andy, he is the guy that always collects the footys at games) decided to join in and have a run and shot at goal and Bags came in from behind and buried him into the ground. Hilarious as the players around laughed at it.

So those last two paragraphs are some examples of the good mood around the place.

On Carlisle he also did some one on one trainging with Nathan Basset, with the focus on Basset teaching him about body work, beating his opponent or working his way around his opponent to present to the kicker.

Also Alessio took the ruckmen (Paddy, TBC, Daniher) for some ball up practice. Paddy looked graceful as ever while TBC looked ok if he were to get a call up this week although I wouldn’t say he looked awesome.

Overall during the main session the players looked fairly sharp. It was definitely Essendon not Essington at training!

Thanks for the reports Karma and Phil :)

Unless he does a Wallis circa 2001.

Wonder how Melksham went.

He got heaps of encouragement from Bomba and his teammates were quick to praise him when he performed well which was reasonably often. No doubt he's down in confidence and I suspect he may be dealing with some non-football issues - has conjecture only on my part, so I wouldn't be too quick to write him off at present.

Question for those who attend training, who would you say is the best kick for goal from a set shot at our club.

You can't tell this from training when there is no pressure. Needs to be assessed from actual games.

Ryder for me.

agreed but he has actually been a little off his game this year.

Crawf only played 11 games in 2008 with quite a few injury concerns, then 3 finals and climbed the goal post padding post win with the biggest smile on his face ever!  The only time I'll ever be happy for a hawks GF win. just for him.

2015 - 11 games Licha.... And finals.  Come on you know you want to!

With such a young fwd line we need him.

What?! What year is this? That's a lot of effort for nothing.

Well the costume wasn't exactly the kind that would win an acadamy award for design, more the quality that would just get a participation award at a Primary School.
Not sure what the point was, perhaps he was hoping there would be a news crew present to get two seconds of fame, or some kind of uni prank, whatever it was it failed as he was largely ignored.

thanks for the reports guys.

Great report Karma Bomber - love you to bring your camera as well.

When Jason came to his decision on retirement I'm not sure he factored in how well he'd be playing or how many consecutive games he'd play (hope we haven't jinxed him!). With that in mind he may be open to reversing his decision

he's been rucking full games virtually one out. I'm willing to put it down tired legs. He has semmed to miss more late in games.

Zac Merrett would have to be close to our best kick for goal now. He has not missed a single goal yet, kicking 9.0. Ryder's radar has been a bit off. I would have said previously he was our best kick for goal. He is tracking at 15.13. In terms of field kicking, only Goddard is a better than Zac Merrett in my opinion.
