Whilst a devastating runner, Saad is not so brilliant when he comes to kick at the end of his runs. The longer the run, the more time opponents get to man up. The solution is to give him license to run, then handpass to one of our elite kicking decision makers. eg. Zerret, Irish, Goddard, Tippa, Fanta and work in some angle changes.
I’m not so sure about the time for opposition to man up.
If you have leg speed like we do spreading from the contest will be a massive advantage as it was last season.
Regularly we outsprinted teams back towards goal which allowed our forwardline lots of room to work in.
I haven’t seen enough of Saads kicking but if he can get his metres gained up to the 400 mark then we will be greatly improved.
The second half of the year it was far to easy just to sit defensive forwards on Hurley or McKenna because they were basically our only attacking options from defence.
Hence why Hartley and Gleeson were working on there attacking games.
*edit - Looking at Saads DE% he runs at 82.5%. Better than solid.
The sessions i went to last year they were all around stoppage work so i don;t think there has been an increase on that this year. I even remember thinking watching watson and heppel starting in the middle that we were getting killed on the spread, even in the intra club matches when they didn;t get first hands on the ball the ‘other team’ cleared it with such ease.
Anyway thanks nackers for the report and in depth follow up to questions.
Saad averaged 327 metres gained last season, while McG averaged 197. So there is an improvement there, and McGrath should improve his metres gained when in the midfield.
The top 5 effective territory gained players at the club based on last year are in order: #1Hurls, Saad, Fanta, Joey, and Stringer. Saad and Stringer are big ins in this respect. IMO Smith will benefit us as a stoppage specialist.
Right, Zac was best by far for metres gained (506) compared with Hurls (461), but if you divide by the number of disposals and rate it according to effective disposal percentage, Hurls was significantly ahead of Zac.
The reasons probably include Zac trying more difficult ( centering ) kicks Zac playing as a mid in more traffic, etc etc, but the fact remains that Hurls averaged more metres per kick, and had a higher effective disposal percentage.
Its no surprise Zac and Hurls were both AA in 2017. Saad is also very goodfor effective metres gained.
Give the ball to any of Hurls, Saad, Conor will result in the best outcome when coming out of defence.
