With the type of attack and desperation to win the ball that Aaron has I would be confident of him playing on any of the small forwards from the other 17 clubs. Shows the same sort of doggedness that Bags has and would be a good inclusion as Bags isn’t getting any younger!
Merrett brothers, Heppell brothers and hopefully Parish brothers on the way!
59 Aaron Heppell 181 78 13.01.95 Defender = 21-years old in January 2016
The below stats taken from last Sunday’s game.
Best of VFL
Aaron Heppell
18 disposals (10 kicks, eight handballs), three marks, eight tackles, three inside 50’s, three rebound 50’s.
Had one of the tougher jobs of the day paying close attention to Frankston ball magnet Ben Cavara for much of the afternoon, keeping him to 11 touches. Heppell limited his influence and but also joined in many of the Bombers many attacking advances.
He looks sharper than in previous years but is A HEPP quick enough to keep up with AFL standard small forwards? Rivoli, Puopolo, Betts, Cameron, Garlett etc etc

Rookie HeppA, I say. People may need to be reminded that Baggers was a humble rookie. But now he is 29 we need to think seriously about his understudy/replacement.
.
HeppA can do anything a small defender needs to be able to do.
He has enough pace, from what I have seen, and he wins one on one contests every time. I know the talent of AFL players is higher, but I can’t remember him losing a one on one contest anytime I have been watching. IMO he is better at just about everything, except overhead, than Gleeson. Who would you rather trying to tackle a strong bodied mid eg Dustin Martin - HeppA or Gleeson? He hits targets every time. He makes good decisions.
And, he has improved so much in 12mths, at 21 yrs of age, who is to say there is not more improvement to come?
How many players play well week, in week out at VFL level? If he were on our list right now, he would deserve selection ahead of Ashby and probably Gleeson.
The only faults I can find are 1. He doesn’t give you much rebound. His instincts are to defend. But I see no reason why he might not improve in this regard as his confidence grows. 2. He is small - like his brother! It hasn’t stopped him being a contested ball winner, and HeppA has similar abilities.
If we have too many HBF types (depends somewhat on Hibbo), I would have him ahead of Gleeson. If we got him as a late pick or a rookie, and traded Gleeson for a pick in the forties, it would be a win.

Dyson is almost 190cm, he’s not small by any stretch of the imagination for a modern midfielder.

Not in dispute, but I’ll refer you to the opening post.
…for discussion.
Firstly the possible recruiting of Aaron Heppell. There is feeling around the club that he is under consideration for 2017 but the proposition which was put was if he was recruited as a back pocket who out of the other seventeen clubs would you be confident of him playing on?
Secondly Patrick Ambrose (who I must confess I underestimated). The feeling around the club is a “horses for courses” argument: his main asset is his endurance and pressure. Most clubs have a tall high endurance player that needs to be matched e.g. Both Riewolts and while Ambrose is not a great mark or prolific ball winner he is very competent in this role.
I think they are asking the wrong question. The question should be, who plays bags's role if he is injured?
I think we have to choose between DEA, hepp and Ashby. If we lose hibb we can probably afford 2 of them. One on the senior list, one rookie.
WE DON’T HAVE DEA, at this stage we cannot have him in our 2017 plans. wow
Umm, we don’t have Hep A either. He’s on the VFL list.
I think what Ivan is saying is that it may require a future selection choice, or team list choice if you prefer, of Dea, Hepp-A or Ashby as the replacement for Baguley should he be injured. Who of the three is the best choice.

So pretty much the same size as Hams.
Not much in it… Heppell slightly taller and slightly heavier.
I’m guessing Boot, that you’re weighing up having too many players of this stature on the list and the requirement for them to be something special when they’re this height and weight, for them to be added to the list.
Personally - I can’t get to games due to rotating shifts and living in the same state as you, so I have no idea. I can only go on any televised vision I can get and reports from trusted VFL watchers, which is not enough to make an INFORMED decision.
