Fair enough. Good calls, I still think Brad will bring this group up strong by 2024-25. Just need to be patient, young list with alot of 50/50s, Just my 2 cents.
I think that’ll be our problem.
We need to be patient.
I don’t think we will be.
Fans and club will see, we need to be here, when we’re actually well behind there.
We need to understand the reality of where we are and work on the smaller steps of becoming a great club.
He might not get there, true, but we should do everything we can to get his skills up to scratch. What he’s got can’t be trained, but what he lacks can definitely be worked on and improved if he’s willing to go the distance.
I think injuries will have a big say in our ladder position this year, there are some positions forward and back where we have little, or unproven/inexperienced, depth.
I still feel bottom 4 or 5 is where we will finish this year, then with a climb up the ladder based on experience into young blokes and some more additions to the list, as Brad tidies things up and exerts his vision.
I’m not worried about this position this year, we have so many young players vying for that position one of them has to step up. And we have Tippa until that happens.
I’m reasonably optimistic about this group still and still think it’s capable of pinching a final this year if absolutely everything went right (which it never does).
Big years our of Draper, stringer, Wright, Ridley, parish McGrath, Martin and 1 small forward will carry us further than many expect.
I’m fine to wait for it to develop.
I don’t think Tippa is the answer. He’s there to mentor (sort of like Eddie Betts at Carlton) and I think he only has 18 months of footy in him. There may be some signs of peak Tippa, but the majority will be well below average.
Eventually we’ll be fine. Both Davey’s are awesome like that. They will provide a lot of joy to fans defensively and with their flair.
There are other spots we need to shore up. The tall defender. We are an undersized backline and need that resolved.
I think Setterfield will do well for us in the midfield, but the mix still needs to transform from the small Shiel, Merrett, Darce to include Hobbs, Caldwell and Perk. It’s still not quite the right mix.
As per normal, our own expectations (both internal and external) will be what screws this up. We need to manage and temper the expectations and be patient.
We are not going to follow the Collingwood path. We are basically following the Carlton & Gold Coast path of a long sustained era of terrible footy with no premiership success before it and trying to find our way to greatness.
I’ll be interested in what our true expectation is.
And none of this bullshit, we’re in the premiership. That can be goal and everything, but what is the real expectation to measure whether we are on the right path or not. The club needs to prove that they aren’t continuing the same mistakes of the past 15 years.
But otherwise, yeah, pretty much agree. We still have too many players where they either all fill a single role, or we just don’t know what their best role is. The priority needs to be changing that so when our talent develops we can target players (trade/FA) for specific holes.
I do too. His best position is a role that in a well balance midfield only one player can perform. It’s almost like a ruckman in that trying to fit two in you are kinda making a sacrifice somewhere else. It no knock on Setterfield to be behind Cripps at Carlton. We desperately need his exact type in our midfield. I’m really bullish on this trade.
A courageous bet. Unless he is switched to the midfield for the entire season the odd of him winning are about right at 500 to 1. Only midfielders win the Brownlow.
