I can’t say it’s wide spread.
And it may just be that day I dropped in because it wasn’t noticeable the week before that.
And it was only at the end of training.
Richmonds flag team was full of laverde types players that were solid but played a role in the team
I see Laverde the same
Yeah Rance & Grimes were just solid players
Yes Rance and Grimes are qaulity but the rest of thier back six were full of solid players
You want to repeat St. Kilda’s mistake with Hind?
No one here is claiming that we can/should try to build a backline around Laverde, but he can be a willing contributor to a solid back 6, and holding his own is what he is capable of doing.
Yep 100% agree
I don’t see any players switching Brad has made it clear that he will be playing players in their correct posistion and not try to fit them in what the team needs. if there is a player we need in a position we go draft or trade for that player.
Sounds as if the problem is the system, not the personnel. I agree that we don’t have a sound defensive system, but I don’t think we solve that by hypothesising about the team without our most reliable defender. In Sydney’s backline Lav would be a gun so we work on improving the team defence and let our capable players reap the benefits.
If we see an improvement on our defence on transition then I think that a lot of naysayers will be owing Lav an apology come season’s end.
Who says what their correct position is? It’s all subjective.
No reason why we can’t do a Freo this year
Lav is behind Strings, Perko, Langa, Marto and one day hopefully not to far away Munkara.
Hind is behind Guelf, Snell, Menzie, Tippa (when fit) and hopefully very soon Junior.
They either keep their defender’s spot or they play VFL and become depth.
The problem has been system for so long. But the personal we have don’t fit into that system. There is very little ‘blue collar’ about the players we’ve drafted recently or the ones on the playing list.
So I don’t see our midfield all of a sudden becoming accountable like the teams I listed.
Laverde and Kelly are a must for the team right now. But I’m hoping we find 1 reliable tall defender. BZT is great, but I think he needs help back there against forward duos. Ridley is the third man up in defence. That’s where he’s been most affective. McGrath and Redman are small defenders that are pretty much locks for the next 3 or 4 years. That leaves 1 more spot in our best 18 for a defender. It’ll be either Laverde or a rebound defender depending on how reliable our midfield is defensively by then.
Eventually he should be the weakest link in our backline the we look to upgrade. It doesn’t need to occur now, but it doesn’t mean we don’t plan for it.
One of the notable things Scott is doing - based on our excellent training reports - is to keep players is their positions.
He hasn’t moved many players around, or moved them into “new” positions. This is in line with his “take time” approach; but, I’m sure as time goes on a number of players will start changing positions/roles.
ts not particularly aimed at you, but ive read it a fair bit on here over the time and i just reckon its off the mark. nino literally said the same thing just before you, the whole “hows he supposed to defend with the ball that comes in” thing - its just not something i agree with. seems like im in the very minority of people who think this though, he’s certainly got no shortage of people lining up to defend him after that post ![]()
Kelly is not in best 8 defenders
I remember this time last year, when that other spud from Richmond was coaching the defenders and some on here were so excited about how good that was. It was either a good effort at espionage or that a tiger bloke is a very poor coach, as most of the Defenders went backwards.
I honestly cannot possibly see how we could be worse than last year.
I’d be very surprised if we’re bottom 2.
well I mean technically there’s plenty of ways we could be worse, whether they happen on not is another question.
I mean the obvious being if Wright goes down for any length of time there goes your main avenue to goal and actual goals, well from last year.
So again there’s plenty of ways to see us being worse, hopefully they don’t happen though
Kelly is not in best 8 defenders
If we want a guy who knows how to shut down an opposition small/medium forward, then Kelly is absolutely in our best 8 defenders.
Slowest decision maker on the list.
Fine, don’t have him setting up the offensive plays. But we still need defenders who can, you know, defend.
