They “probably” were also happy to see him off the list.
He was a free agent so they had no choice and he played 20 games for Adelaide the year that he left so they clearly saw him as best 22.
They had a choice of making him an offer and trying to keep him, correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe they even did that.
I think with Kelly people focus on what he does (or more accurately doesn’t do) with the ball - which is understandable. But I think there is a tendency to look past the fact that he is the best defender of the most dangerous small / medium forward we’ve had in years. He towelled up Cameron and Heeney, to name a couple.
You have no idea if they did offer him one, he told them before the season ended he wanted to go home to Victoria. No one knows the discussions they had prior to that.
Maybe they thought pick 42 as compo was better than trying to pay him overs to keep him on the books. I’d do the same if say, Phillips said he wanted out. Doesn’t mean I don’t want to keep him around for insurance/depth
Maybe…Probably…do you know for a fact that they offered him one or is it a probably?
That’s possible but I don’t think that’s the case because slowing down play or waiting to get more options ain’t a role, it’s something all players should can do whereas speeding up the play, you get the ball in players’ hand like Hind.
Kelly is practically the only player who does this, and in one training report, Kelly got called out for slowing down the play. Langford used to have this issue when he was younger, so it’s something Kelly can work on.
Diesel Williams
Do you know for a fact that they didnt or is it probably?
The other players, especially, Ridley, Redman and Hind would be setting up closer to the contest or setting up for a switch which would explain why its so often Kelly hard up to the boundary in these situations. Hes keeping to the boundary side so hes not involved in the switch and is instead ready to take the slow play if its needed.
If Kelly is ever matched up on Rampe, then one of them is in the wrong half of the field.
No mate I don’t, if there was though I’m sure it would have been reported somewhere.
It’s probably a meaningless conversation at the end of the day as he won’t be part of our next premiership tilt anyway.
I think they’ll pick him because we’re undersized as it is. The logic of picking an extra medium defender to offset a lack of height probably doesn’t track but that’s what I think they’ll do nevertheless.
I think Ridley and zerk play their best with a tight match up. Ditto Kelly. I think lav can play a tight match up pretty damn well for the most part but he’s probably also the most athletic of the bunch so I wouldn’t mind him being given the softest match up and being the first one to zone off. I remember the Anzac Day game when he’d just moved into defence and he was everywhere and held the defence together single handedly.
He’s a bit more reckless with how he attacks the ball in the air than Ridley and a bit quicker which I think means he can be slightly more effective playing that role. I think Ridley’s real strength is reading the drop of the ball of the boot before his opponent does and out positioning him.

AFL news 2023: All the latest injury updates from your club
A relieved Essendon is expected to welcome back its reigning club champion in positive news for the club but for a sidelined Brisbane Lion the picture is not so pretty. All the injury latest.
Essendon expects tall forward Peter Wright to resume running this week after being cleared of serious injury following a scare at training last week.
The Bombers confirmed Wright had only experienced tightness in his calf, which the club said had settled well over the players’ short late-January break.
Wright gave Bombers’ fans a scare last Wednesday when he left the training track early during the club’s match simulation session with a calf issue.
Precautionary scans have since cleared the 203cm forward of any serious damage to his calf.
After a five-day break, the Bombers’ players will return to the club on Tuesday.
The Bombers said Wright was expected to be back running this week.
Essendon’s reigning club champion, 26-year-old Wright is coming off a career-best season when he kicked 53 goals.
He finished fifth in the Coleman Medal race behind Carlton’s Charlie Curnow, Tiger Tom Lynch and Geelong premiership pair Jeremy Cameron and Tom Hawkins.
Phew! He’s probably our most important player.
