In Wuhan currently. My suggestion to the wife to head to the wet markets to pick up some pangolins went down like a lead balloon unsurprisingly

Awesome

Back with Qatar again or going Emirates this time?

Qatar again. They were a couple hundred dollars cheaper and I think overall you still get there and back quicker with Qatar. Which is important to me.

Yep, Qatar is about 3hrs shorter on the way over and Emirates about 1hr shorter on the way back

I’ve found the Saily app is simple, cheap, and effective and have used that on my last few trips. Download the app, choose the destination, and buy the length you want.

On an iPhone you can go into cellular settings before you fly out and choose the eSIM for cellular data, and leave your existing sim as “default voice line” if you need to receive calls. Saily automatically finds the local network for the country you’ve set up, when you land. Other esims likely function much the same way.

@Aceman do you work? Jealous

I used saily on my last trip to Thailand and Singapore. Was easy to use.

Absolutely I work but entitled to my leave and I’m also lucky that I can also take time in lieu instead of overtime and once that’s exhausted I can take leave without pay. Wife has long service too

Last day for us in Shanghai. So looks like we may have missed you, Aceman.
This is a great city. Of course it has about 7x the population of Melbourne but it probably has 50x times the public infrasructure (eg building their 19th metro line now, while it has the only maglev line in the world. Its major University is amongst the best in the world in the medical field).

It has been foggy most of the week but got some sun today - just in time for this view to the Pearl Tower.

There were workers on harnesses from the upper deck cleaning that yesterday.

Can vouch for Airolo as well. Works similarly and the app is user friendly. Smooth use in Laos and Vietnam a couple of times in the past six months.

Are CPAP devices counted towards your carry on luggage?

No. And the check-in staff don’t bat an eyelid at them.

I considered South Korea a while back, but a few too many reports made it seem a bit meh. What do you like about it?

Well, it depends if you like places such as Tokyo and Taipei City (which I did a great deal).
I love a good public transport system and it definitely has that.
I love markets for good, inexpensive street food.
It’s sprawling and busy, but you can easily find yourself away from the masses just by wandering.
It has a good balance of new and old town, with a fair bit of preserved (or restored) history.
It’s actually quite picturesque, with hills to the north and south, and good opportunities for hiking (of all abilities).
It’s not cheap (by SE Asian standards), but it’s no dearer than Aust.

Good to know - thanks

Oh, and I should have added… just about every metro station has a (clean) toilet on the non-ticketed side. Important when you’ve got a 12 y/old in tow…
