Travel Thread (Part 1)

On a separate note I am heading to KL with the fam for a week or so and thought we might hit an Island.

I don't want to go right up north o I am thinking Tioman.

Looks like paradise.

Anyone been?

?

Shut up MH370!

Too soon?

Unless you are a first time traveler (which you are not) you will despise the place.

hangers on, wannabes, try hards, con men and lady boys.

Cheers, suspected as much. I'll look for somewhere on the periphery.

I'm heading to Thailand in a couple of weeks. Meeting a friend in Bangkok and then heading south with no particular plan other than to relax.

She wants to stay in the Khao San Road area of Bangkok because it's cheap, but I've heard mixed reports and I'm wary of staying in a hostel/dorm arrangement for security reasons. Any advice from the Blitz hive-mind?

Tends to be the further from major cities/tourist places you go the cheaper it gets... not the other way around.

Just about anywhere in SE Asia will be cheap by Aus standards anyway.

A wonderful place. Check on the season though, to see if it will be open. Otherwise Prehension (sp???) is also great.

Flying out to Hong Kong tomorrow for 5 days for business.  Won't have much time for myself outside of work commitments but would really appreciate it if someone can recommend some places to eat.  Staying at the W and working near Central during the day.

Actually I'll be in Bali, not Bangers.

But yeah, that part of Bangers isn't great. It's really cheap, but it's full of questionable people (including westerners).

Ive stayed at a hotel called the Indra Regent a couple of times. In 1990 it was quite nice, then in 2005 it seemed a bit run down, but it was still functional and the staff were good and happy to organise things for you etc. Of course there's a pool and a resturant, but unless they've refurbished it recently I wouldn't call it luxurious.

Edit: Our hotel wasnt on Khao San road, but it was quite central to most things, or a cheap tuk tuk or taxi ride to anywhere in the city.

Just got back from a week in Fiji, travelled a fair bit both the main island and a few up north. Pretty unreal… once you get out of the main city people are insanely laid back and ridic nice.

Potentially headed to Chicago later this year (once I move back to the States) and Singapore. Anything cool to see or do?

sorry, but singapore is pretty boring imo. its like asia without all the cool stuff, the crazy stuff and the dodgy stuff. i reckon its what asians think the west is like. and what boring caucasians think asia should be like.

Chicago on the other hand, never been, but i reckon thered be heaps of stuff to see and do.

Haha sweet, yeah just be there for a couple of days for a mate's wedding!

Get to a couple of blues clubs on the south side. Cruise on the Great Lakes.

I have an 8 hour stop-over there later this year. Should I bother leaving the airport?

Absolutely.

Bangkok is amazing.

You could hit one of the greatest bars in the world, eat some of the best food, go to the markets, see woman spit all sorts of things of all sorts of places, go to Thai Boxing.

I was just commenting on staying at Khoa San road.

Ah, I see.

Awesome. So plenty of time for me to buy cheap Tiger beer singlets and contract HIV?

For anyone who may be interested Air NZ has tickets to L.A onsale for $840, in June. I don't think I've ever seen cheaper.

Probably because they received some press the other day about not grounding their fleet of 777-200's

We've booked tickets for New York and Mexico in late August and the first half of Sept and would be interested in any anecdotes/advice from people who have been thereabouts.

Basically we have a week in NY in late August and I'd be interested in how far out of Manhattan accom is feasible if you want to get around. Is it easy to get around if you're based outside Manhattan? Is Harlem OK? Is a day trip to Gettysburg possible?

The non negotiables are the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note and at least one other jazz club(that's my pay off for foregoing my preferred destinations of Laos and Sri Lanka).

We leave for Cancun early Sept for 18 days. Not interested in Cancun as such, have no interest in sunbaking on beaches but wouldn't mind some snorkling. Anyone know what's good nearby?

Want to head inland for Mayan country and Chichen Itza etc. Has anyone used tour companies over there that they'd recommend? Some tours include Guatemala, is that cramming in too much?

I've been told you just don't drive. Is this the case? Are the buses ok?

Probably want to avoid Mexico City but someone told me I should reconsider. Just not sure yet. ???

At this stage we'd like to spend 4 of the 18 days in Cuba. Anybody been? Is it easy to pick up flight tickets in Cancun? Any views on Havana or thereabouts?

Any info or stories would be much appreciated.

P.S. Just looked back to the start of the thread and realise Grik and others gave me some good info back in Aug last year but I'd appreciate any more if it's available.

Ok, my 2c.
NY, I stayed in Manhattan and had a week. Is recommend staying there, why are you trying to not stay there? Most people I know have been staying in aparwnta that are furnished. Don't know of sites, but location and $$$ were good.
Cancan? Make sure you know if you are checked into an "adults only" (see swingers) resort, was a bit surprised about activities were we stayed til someone pulled us aside and explained the resort to is. What's worse was they tried to sell is timeshare...
Anyway, the ruins at Chichen Itxa are great, it's a day trip in a comfy air conditioned bus. I wouldn't drive anywhere down there, just like Asia, bit chaotic. Cancun is a real westerners hub for tours and transport, and most is cheap and high quality.
Snorkeling can be done over at the Isla Murejes, which is another day 1/2 day trip just off the coast. The places we went were just waist deep for fun, but I imagine there's much better. Beach and village here were great. We also got to 'cuddle' a 6 foot long shark. I don't know what the guy was talking about, and I paid a dollar for the photo op, the thing was alive, but seemed happy to not bite....
I think there's better ruins and but just as many cancun tourists at Tulum, and Coba? and even head over to the island of Cozumel? Depending on your underwater expertise,
I e never heard anything bad about Mexico City, but, it'd be pretty chaotic I reckon, Cuba similar.

Cheers Tinhillterror. Have to do some research on Tulum, Coba and Cozumel.

Ideally we'll stay in Manhattan, and preferably in an apartment, but I think we're arriving in the peak period and some of the tariffs are seriously expensive so we were wondering if the areas just the other side of the river were feasible. I've also heard Harlem has sort of gone up market and is safe nowadays. But obviously we'd prefer something central.
