Travel Thread (Part 1)

If you are needing to book a round the world ticket, you don't mind which direction you Jo, is there one that's best?

Travelling West is better for jetlag

Fwiw if anyone is travelling to the Gold Coast with kids, you can purchase ‘4 for the price of 3’ passes that get you into Wet n wild, movie world, sea world for $300. Obviously a saving of 25%, the big plus is, it’s valid for 12 months. So either use it all week, or a couple of times a year it’s great value.

Wife and I are thinking of heading over to the states whilst we are still "young" and before little ones come along. We are going for 4 weeks and I've worked out most of the places we'd like to check out but we have about a 2 weeks undecided so far.

So far the breakdown of the trip is, flying into LA and working our way over to New York.

4 nights in LA

3 nights at Disneyland

3 nights in Vegas ( including a day trip out to Grand Canyon)

8 nights in New York

I had thought about hiring a car from NY and driving up to boston, over to Niagra Falls and the down to Washington/Phili that would take about 7-8 days.

Would 2-3 days be enough to see San Francisco?

It's "enough" yeah, but I've found that most people regret staying in L.A longer than they do San Francisco. Many find San Fran to be the unexpected highlight of their trip.
As for the car idea, whilst probably not a problem, I'll throw in this suggestion http://www.tours4fun.com/tours/washington-d.c/multiday-tours/
They have trips that last anywhere between 3 and 9 days, and cover Boston, Niagara Falls, Washington and Philly and more if you want. At usually under $100 a night, with your accommodation covered, it might make things a little easier.

IMO:

Downtown LA & Hollywood sucks, it's trashy, that time will be much better spent in San Diego or NYC or San Fran. A whole day each at Disneyland & Disney's California Adventure will be heaps, if you like coasters go to Six Flags Magic Mountain. Disney accomodation is expensive for what you get, so if you can stay near property instead of in a Disney Hotel you'll get a lot more for your money. The best way to do the Canyon is by Chopper, takes about 4 hours instead of a whole day. If you're gonna do that driving trip you'd start in Washington (great place to spend a couple of days btw), then go to Philly, NYC, Boston & then you might as well fly across to Niagara. As for San Fran, if you just want to see Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Park & Mission District the 3 days will cover you, if you want to see some of the nicer stuff in the region ie Muir Woods, Monterey Bay, Napa Valley etc then 3 days is nowhere near enough.

Thanks for the info.

We are planning on doing Six Flags and Universal Studios on 2 of the days in LA, then 1 day to just check out a few other things. My sister was in the states a couple of years back and suggested not to stay in LA for to long cause there's not much to see.

I haven't really looked into Accom much yet, just trying to plan our stops first, but staying outside of Disneyland is what we've thought about already.

Looks like San Fran is a must so I'll check it out further.

Thanks again

LA can be great fun. Not sure why all the haters.

Some great sport. Including college stuff.

Awesome movie stuff and celeb spotting.

Unreal music.

Venus Beach.

Comedy store. I saw Andrew Dice Clay, Pauly Shore, Chris Rock and Richard Prior.

I also went to a couple of TV show records which was awesome.

Do the back lot tour at Universal.

If you are into Films like I am there is heaps to do. You can actually find out where stuff is shooting and turn up and watch.

I actually just like hanging. I've bumped into all sorts of people. Slash being one of my favourites beers!

But if I had extra days to play with I would pop them onto New York.

When it comes to the Grand Canyon don't just fly over it. Go to it. Walk in it. It's mad.

Yeah we are both movie buffs and that's why we planned on checking out LA a little bit.

We are planning on doing the Helicopter to the Canyon so we can spend a bit of time looking around it.

Ditto.

Downtown LA can be quite interesting...Bradbury Building, Angels Flight, Old town, Union Station

Hollywood Boulevard, La Brea Tar Pits, Venice Beach, Getty Center...need a car for a couple of them.

But San Fran needs 3 or 4 days minimum, extra if you want to go to Yosemite. That's at least a full day.

I like L.A much more than the average person I've met, I just think most people tend to enjoy San Fran more and neglect to allocate enough time there.
Go to a bar on the Sunset Strip. It was some of the best fun I've ever had, so many characters.
Studio tours are pretty cool too seeing you like movies. I've done the Warner Bros and Paramount ones. I liked the Warner Bros one best because they let me sit on the Friends couch, which is a big deal to me. But both were awesome.
Venice Beach is a sight to see, and the Santa Monica area is beautiful.
There is a lot to like if you're looking for it. But the general consensus seems to be L.A is most people's low light.

Is Niagra Falls worth the 2 days it seems it'll take to see it?

That's because they don't just hang.

Like Melbourne, you need to discover it.

I was hanging on Sunset one afternoon and Slash walked in. Had a beer with me and a chat. Was cool.

Lemmy hangs at the Whisky.

It's not as compact as San Fran. So you San Fran you feel more connected to everything I guess.

Both are cool places for various reasons.

I spent 2 hours there.

It's amazing but also cheesy. It's a tick off the list thing.

You going from NYC? How you getting there?

A lot of the time the traveling part is the most fun!

Yeah going from NYC. Not sure how we'd do it. I'm thinking the bus tours might be the best and most economical way

Speaking of travel, I just bought a new suit bag, great quality- Antler of course :)

If you going to do it grab a hire car. Stopping funny crazy places is the best fun.

I'm not sure I would be spending 2 days away from NYC to go to Niagra falls though.

Something to weigh up.

For me I'd drive to Boston.

Is Niagra Falls worth the 2 days it seems it'll take to see it?

Gawd no, unless you want to spend a lot of time wondering how humans farked up mother nature, with an ugly crawl of casinos and hotels in the sky line.

If you are busing try and spend some time in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Providence (cool Italian influence), Stamford - some beautiful coastal areas along there.

If you have time North - get to Toronto. Great place, you will be able to catch a ball game aswell. Alot to do there

Oh and visit Washington DC - beautiful history and architecture

Thanks again for the info.

I'm now thinking about skipping the Falls altogether, and adding 3-4 days in SF, 2 days in each of DC and Philli. I wouldn't mind heading to Boston to check out the Garden and Fenway park if we can spare a day or 2.

Anyone got good recommendation where to stay in NY? I know the subway system is great over there so location isn't an issue but staying somewhere we could walk to a few places would be nice.

If it hasn't been said you need to book Alcatraz NOW

Ok thanks. Hopefully we will have dates settled tonight/tomorrow and I'll be booking everything on Tuesday.
