Travel Thread (Part 1)

You got ripped off!

We had 4 nights in BA. Found plenty to do to fill in that time. We joined a number of those ā€œfreeā€ walks to various parts of the city which we found quite worthwhile.

We stayed in San Telmo, not the most glamorous neighbourhood but convenient to get to most places of interest. The city is very walkable but there’s a good (and quite cheap) metro which we used quite a number of times.

I’d be confirming the date of the flight out of Iguassu and then fitting the rest around that. A full weekend in BA would be ideal if the flight date allows it. There was a large Sunday market in the San Telmo area which was quite worthwhile. Assume this is still the case

Thanks @CalDon. There are a few Sunday markets apparently, including San Telmo. And a gaucho-themed market on the outskirts which could be good or bad. Did you feel 4 nights was plenty or were you left wanting more?

For now it’s coming down to 4 days in BA with hiking in both El Chalten and TDP or a week in BA with hiking in one of those

Going to see Fitz Roy?

There’s a Jumping Places Youtube or two covering hiking around El Chalten

We found 4 more than ample. That didn’t include much time for museums, galleries, churches (etc) which weren’t on our agenda in BA.

Yeah, will be El Chalten and / or TDP. Trying to work it out.

Will check out YouTube thanks

Fitz Roy is the mountain depicted on Patagonia’s logo. Looks impressive.

They spent a while in Argentina, and the added benefit is that the girl is somewhat attractive.

LATAM has once again pushed back its resumption of direct MEL-SCL flights. Was slated for July 17th but they have pulled all loadings and inventory until September 1st which suggests a few problems and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is further hold ups.

Anyone familiar with booking domestic flights in the USA online, at least the the last few years?

I’ve been trying to organise a few flights on WebJet, but every flight over multiple legs coming up says that they’re carry-on luggage only. Am I understanding it right when I guess that this only means that the quoted price includes carry-on only, but you can buy a ticket one of these flights, then book and pay for checked-in luggage at the time you check in? Is that the default way things work over there? What happens if too many people decide they want to bring a bunch of checked-in baggage?

I was last in the states nearly 20 years back and I don’t remember it working that way back then.

I haven’t been to the US recently, but it used to be that business class allowed for check in baggage.

Qantas has just announced a sale of flights to SCL if anyone is interested. But of course they are from SYD (unless you want to go MEL-LAX first).

Then those people who boarded last get their carry-on luggage checked. I don’t know what it is like now, but it used to be that people board with an enormous amount of stuff. US airlines generally board by zone, so those people boarding first would just put their crap in the first few lockers before making their way to the back of the plane to put the rest of their stuff.

So … am i safe to book one of these 5kg-carry-on-luggage-only flights, and then register & pay for my 20kg checked-in luggage once check in actually opens? That’s what I’m really trying to find out. Cos right now, there’s pretty much zero available flights between, for example, New York and Minneapolis that will let me take anything other than carry-on, if I’m taking what Webjet says at face value.

Female colleagues on OS work trips refused to travel Thai air because strict limits on the weight of carry on baggage were enforced against them while the blokes were lugging heavy suitcases as they boarded.

Bunch of ā€œcheapā€ latin american flights via qantas for times you might not want to go(or maybe you do…until about the end of november)

I travelled from SF to JFK back in 2010. It cost $25 to check luggage, but they seemed to allow unlimited size carry on, and the family in our row took full advantage. Way, way more than 7kg per head and completely choked up the overhead lockers.

Ridiculous policy.

Just booked flights SGN TO PQC WITH Vietjet … they took money and send me no tickets or receipt or email  think I may get refund from ing … anyone had experience with them

I had this issue when booking for the boss last year. Every time I tried to add luggage after booking the flight it went to an error page. Boss was able to book it at the airport no problems.

I saw another YouTube (Mahna Gafori was the channel) on travelling in Patagonia, but it was mainly on the Chilean side, Torres del Paine, Punta Arenas etc and telling people to check on current border crossing regulations, because when she was last there, they were closed due to Covid.
