It really depends on you for tourist stuff. Do you like traditional historic stuff? Are you a geek? Do you just like strolling and taking in neighbourhoods?

Easy city to get around despite being massive, and most good things can be reached within half an hour to an hour of each other.

It’s actually Mrs THT, so I think she wanted to check out clothing, fabric etc.

We’ve been before, but it was with our kids, so we were a little restricted. I did like ‘■■■■ Alley’ though for food.

Maybe she’d enjoy strolling Harajuku/Omotesando, or Shibuya and just taking in clothing stores? Fabric like kimono shops? I think Kagurazaka is supposed to be an interesting old geisha area for that stuff. All of that, and ■■■■ alley, isn’t too far apart.

What’s the blocked out Alley?

As your wife probably knows, Japanese textiles are to die for

Piiss Alley… street food area.

Yeah, not sure what it’s actually called. But it was a fun little area for a big beer and a yakitori cook up. Most places only hold about 6-8 patrons.

This came on my email the other day.(do your own research!)

HSBC Star Alliance credit card.

Zero annual fee for the first year.

If you then spend 4 grand on the card (say your airfares). You instantly get Gold Status on Star Alliance.

Normally it’s a 60 grand spend to get gold status so sounds like it’s pretty good. (Lounge access would be handy if doing a big trip on these airlines)

This actually looks decent, considering Gold membership is better than Qantas club that might cost $600-$700 per annum, and doesn’t give you some of the perks.

Do you know if you can just sign up, spend the $4K, pay it off and cancel the account, whilst still retaining the 12month Gold level?

This has been around for some time and is quite popular.
You lose your status if you close your account so you need to hold the credit card for 12 months. This CC has high interest rates and high overseas transaction fees so not perfect for everyone.
Star Alliance Gold is ok but not my preferred Alliance but you can get some decent use out of it just make sure you nominate a good program for it

I think so. You would get the card. Spend 4K. Get your gold status then cancel it. Unless you fly a lot every year and see value in the annual fee.

Aside from overseas you can hang out in the virgin lounges as well.

Be very good if you plan on flying a star alliance airline like Singapore.

Incorrect.
If you cancel the card you lose your Gold status.

Also to get the Virgin lounge access you need to preferably nominate Singapore Airlines.
Star Alliance Gold on its own won’t give you Virgin lounge access

Sorry yes mean keep it for the year of your travel.

Before the annual fee is charged again cancel. But yeah Of course you would lose card benefits if you canned it

I have a choice between a free weekend in Frankfurt, Munich or Modena. Which is better? (Leaning toward Modena)

Also, what is the international QANTAS business class lounge in Melbourne like these days, is it worth arriving early to chill?

Are you into Pavarotti and/or Ferraris?

Munich over Frankfurt every weekend of the year. Dunno about Modena.

Munich over Frankfurt most definitely. I never stay long in Frankfurt as it’s a pretty ordinary city IMO but if you have a car you are only an hour away from what I think is the best stretch of the Rhine with a stack of amazing towns easily worth a few days stay.
Modena is ok especially if you are into cars but not a place that I would go out of my way for now that I’ve been there.
If you are going to stay in just the city itself for 2 days I’d go Munich, Modena, Frankfurt in that order

MEL QF Business lounge is a dump TBH but dependant on where you are flying and if it’s with Qantas you will have access to the Emirates lounge which is superb and a great place to chill

I’m thinking the same order of places. Modena would get me to the Ferrari Museum, which I am told is worth the visit. I might try and extend ‘work’ in Munich to take in some of the sites.

Ahhh. Bummer about the lounge. It’s for Mrs THT and she’s flying to Japan. Shes rarely been to a lounge, so it will probably be a little novelty at least.

Perfect.
