Travel Thread (Part 1)

Ahhhh.

Just realised, domestic to Sydney, then business class flight from Sydney to Haneda.

I think that’s where the flights will land. I am told it’s quite nice and worth a bit of time.

If it’s where bolognese sauce comes from, I’d want to pay tribute.

Ahh, the horrible SYD D—>I experience.
Same story though with lounges.
SYD International business lounge is rubbish so head to the Emirates lounge, it’s nice.
She would also have domestic lounge access in MEL, go to the Qantas business lounge not the Qantas Pub

I’ll be sure to have her mention you by name!!

Thanks so much.

Now when I fly for work to Europe it’s going to be battle class, cheap and not so cheerful.

I will absolutely be hitting up you guys for tips.

I spent a lot of time in Bologna as I had a friend there. She told me that spaghetti bolognese is not really a Bologna dish. They tend to use a fair amount of rice, Milanese style .
One of my family did a semester at the University.
There is a church there replicating the three churches in old Jerusalem.

This is bullshit. Next you’ll be telling me I can’t get a Hawaiian pizza while I’m there.

Isn’t Tagliatelle al Ragu the original dish, found everywhere in Bologna?

Not the same as a ā€˜bolognaise’ found here but the lineage is there.

Yes … floating apartments and all amidst that stop off up the harbour, I can assure all still there @BAAKKEERRRR…

Copenhagen early spring right now for a few days with excellent clear blue skies is wonderful. And yes, still stupidly expensive until you quickly navigate ways through. Clean as clean. Great place to nip off to from the UK. People super friendly, food, art, design etc. Inspiring.

Just nice to visit a beautiful European capital not yet panicking. Sweden adjacent, Norway to the north and the Baltics and Russia literally just around the corner. They maintain a calm I admire.

This is the dish I see at Italian restaurants in my neighbourhood.

Not so much the spag bol. Gotta go the kids menu at the club for that

Thats cos there’s a few Italians around running them.

Would be the same in Melbourne yeah?

Spag Bol is an American invention, should tell you all you need to know.

As others have said Munich, then Modena and then Frankfurt.

Depends on if you want to drive anywhere though as Heidelberg is worth seeing and place around there are good to visit.

QANTAS Business Lounge in Melbourne is very poor as are most of their lounges everywhere now. Actually none at Tulla are that flash even Emirates, compared to what they have overseas.

Cross posted fr US politics thread as a PSA for anyone who might need to visit the US and is looking at creative, cost effective routes

ā€˜ One Traveller reader has vowed never to return to the US after he was detained last month for eight hours at New York’s John F. Kennedy airport, while his laptop and smartphone were examined by US border guards. He was finally deported back to Australia.

His ā€œcrimeā€? Taking a more circuitous route to the US to save on his airfare, though he stresses he was not accused of any actual ā€œwrongdoingā€.

He arrived in the US following a 24-hour flight from Sydney to New York via Hong Kong, with Florida his planned final destination. From there he intended to board a cruise and says he is now $15,000 out of pocket due to the cruise line’s refusal to refund his fare.ā€˜

Their tourism industry is about to fall off a cliff and die. There will be a lot of empty planes.

They likely thought he was Austrian.

Need a sim card for the Philippines for about 30 days. Only ones I can get from here are esims (which I had once that never worked). Which are best & are they easy to get over there.
PS Any basic travel hints

I honestly don’t bother anymore but made easier by work paying my phone bill. Telstra works fine in the Philippines and we are pretty regular visitors over there

There have been similar tales to this for years unfortunately but unfortunately it seems to be more common since the new regime. I personally know some pilots who even have been given a talking to recently for having negative views of Trump on their phones. They were told their clearance could be revoked for further visits and that they would be flagged. All pilots and crew have been instructed to take burner phones with them on jobs to the US now.
We take some bizarre routes around the globe and although we haven’t technically travelled in the US we have transited a number of times through there and have got some lengthy questioning. Some staff understand how it works and are fine but some think you are hiding something by taking extravagant routes

US pilots?

No, Australian

Anyone been to Sapporo in winter?

I went skiing there in that late 1980s and it snowed most days and rained the other days. Skiing was great and cheap, though I was much younger and could take the bleak weather. It was December, and I was told best month is March. Back then it was a nice city, still basking in the Winter Olympic Games of years past. No idea what it is like now.
