US politics - cooked

This is a normal gift as well, right?

Good. And stay in jail.

Four members of the far-right Proud Boys have been found guilty of seditious conspiracy by a jury in Washington, DC, for their roles to forcibly prevent the peaceful transfer of power from then-President Donald Trump to Joe Biden after the 2020 election.

Child labour is back baby!

Didn’t see this crop up either:

Ok, so maybe there is a third way to change the SC. Of course, it requires control of both houses…

Seems the USSC has a cultural issues to sort out.

The US Supreme Court is undoubtedly the best court that money can buy.

Just another day in the land of our masters.

Serbia had a school shooting as well. 13 year-old student walked in and killed nine.

Why do I bring it up?

  • The parents were arrested immediately and the father has been detained.
  • The president announced TEN major proposals for stricter gun laws, including a two-year moratorium on firearms licences. Shooting ranges (where the kid and his father recently visited) will no longer allow minors or ex-convicts.

Serbia apparently has more guns per person than any other country in the world, except for the US of course.

It is really quite striking how Serbia is viewing this event. Within hours everyone is mobilised to immediately work out how to prevent it from happening and is galvanised to pass legislation almost overnight. The attitude is “this never happens here”, and they want it to remain that way.

America, be like Serbia.

I wonder if the Aus govt should do the right thing and accept American refugees escaping from the gun violence over there?? We could make special allowances if need be.

The Serbian Education Minister was forced to resign, after he blamed the school shooting on the internet, games and western values.
(And there has been an official 3 day national mourning).

Oh it is already happening, albeit in an unofficial capacity.

Hopefully interrogated to ensure they have no Republican or evangelical connections.

Hmmmm. I’m not sure Vucic and his regime are ideal banner holders for this cause, good sentiments notwithstanding.

These are terrible numbers for Biden. Whilst I suspect if you broke the numbers down in key states he may still carry a general election, if the economy gets worse that may not be the case. He may need the republicans to go extra looney (a distinct possibility).

I’d hate to see what “extra looney” looks like considering the current state of things.

Trump will get the nomination for the Republicans which means Biden has it in the bag, poll numbers won’t matter. They really are stupid falling in line behind Trump after all his recent losses, I will be worried however if De Santis can somehow get the nomination. On the age gap alone.

Wow the difference is stark

I feel like these sort of stats need context.
Child mortality rates can have a huge impact on that life expectancy average.
Which may go towards access to health care, possibly anti-vax attitudes, even access to abortion for many reasons.
It’s not just ‘people die in their 60’s here and in their 80’s there.’

Edit: I feel like a better stat for what it’s actually trying to say, is life expectancy for people who have turned 40.

True but if it is child mortality that’s more horrific.

I think those figures would be more stark.
If you’re not getting your maternity check-ups (for whatever reason), if you choose or are forced to bear a child knowing it has a less than five year life expectancy…

Point is, that’s a different issue to general health and lifestyle and so on for adults.
But it’s all wrapped up in the same figure.

Australia’s infant mortality rate is 3.2 deaths per thousand, as compared with the US (from eight years ago, it will be worse there now and going forward) of 5.89.

And infant mortality is defined as 12 months, so even that doesn’t tell the full story.
