ALP has Emily’s list for gender equality in MPs. Too much for Libs. The nasty well connected ones from private schools who wouldn’t get elected otherwise get on Senate tickets . The quality ones rarely get pre-selected. The one who seems quality managed to get pre-selected for the safe seat of Flinders, helped by Greg Hunt in standing ground against the blokes. Katie Allen has a fight on her hands for preselection in a winnable Lib seat.

the usa’s conservative movement is so tied to puritanicanal roots of the original pilgrims that feelings of sexual desire (or for us idiots, horniness) still bring a pathological level of shame and anger unto the self
so instead of wanker’s regret being just a mild “hmm not proud of that one” like it is for most of us, to an evangelical type it is a genuine episode of rage/fear, where the temptation must be eradicated. whether it be a particularly comely [redacted], or certain categories of the 'hub

I’d hazard a guess that pre-social media dominating lives, they’d be blissfully unaware that many of these “woke” changes you mentioned were taking place.
Now they can access and muster up all the unwarranted rage and fear they need, and add conspiracies and lies on top of it.

I think there’s something to that. The data published by the 'hub every year shows that the southern states typically have the most taboo fetishes.
Related but different note, the missionaries who first landed in Hawaii noted that the natives would wake up every day at 5AM, have all their chores done by midday and spend the rest of the day surfing and playing music. In the view of the missionaries, the natives were lazy for spending so much time recreationally. The “protestant work ethic” has had significant sway on how Americans view things like the minimum wage, healthcare and “handouts.”

The last time I was in SF, I had a conversation with a respected (female) executive who had just run an anti-discrimination exercise with her female dominated team. They kept coming up with the best candidates’ applications were from males.
Also I am reminded of my time at a famous institute in Melbourne. It had a female director, female Manager and female head of HR. They were cited by govt report as having discriminatory policies for not having women in senior positions. Why? Because they were too incompetent to file the actual reports.

There’s always going to be bad stories when not done well, but it’s perfectly valid to take action to fix imbalances. If you have a workplace that doesn’t fit the broader societal makeup then there’s something suppressing people from taking those jobs. This is especially problematic if high paying jobs are being excluded from population segments.
Talent isn’t focused in certain cultures, races, religions or sexes. If you block groups from providing their skills then you reduce the talent pool and everything gets a bit worse.
That can be due to a lack of people coming through the education pathways. It can be groups not being interested in certain industries due to the workplace culture. It can be discriminatory promotion processes. Whatever it is, if you end up with an uneven mix it’s because the fingers are on the scales somewhere and it’s going to lead to worse outcomes.
I’m a fan of removing all identifying information from resumes for initial screening as it’s the fairest way to do things. The last thing you want is to promote people who can’t do the job, but that being said I’ve seen an enormous number of men who were completely and utterly useless. Incompetence is spread as equally as talent, people don’t get all upset when a man gets promoted above his level of incompetence, but they’ll go to town on the sweeping statements when it happens to a woman.
