US politics - is weird (part 6)

Why not?

The comparison is very relevant imo…both dictators, both with territorial ambitions beyond their established borders, both thumbed their noses at the established world order…do you disagree with any of those points?

The major differences are that (1) Putin has been called to account far quicker than Hitler was and (2) that Europe (via NATO) is much more aligned than it was back in the 1930s.

If Putin invades the majority of Europe then we can make comparisons.

The US allowed use of HIMARS within 20km of the border of Kharkiv oblast that directly threatened the city. This was relaxed only because Putin exploited US restrictions in order to launch an offensive towards Ukraine’s second largest city. Ukraine knew that masses of Russian troops were preparing to invade, but couldn’t hit them. They had about a month where they could have hit the troop concentrations and prevented a new front from being opened.

So this minor change in the restrictions was directly in response to an escalation that Putin ordered. It is pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. Russian air bases that are within ATACMS range is still off limits. No real long range strikes are allowed. And as I mentioned before, this change has been immediately downplayed by Russia as inconsequential, so escalation really isn’t a thing.

In terms of Russia losing a conventional war, they’re pretty much losing to Ukraine. Have a look at the latest video by Covert Cabal on YouTube.

If Russia escalated against NATO by shooting down a Western aircraft or lobbing a few missiles around, they’d get obliterated by the NATO response. 95% of Russian forces are in Ukraine, now using at best 1980s equipment and at worst 1950s. NATO would systematically take out everything on the ground using massed deployment of stealth aircraft. So nobody in this game is interested in that fight, not NATO and not Putin.

@planb the comparison is more so in Neville Chamberlain’s response to Hitler annexing Austria and Czechoslovakia.

And the comparison to what @Benny40 is saying in sometimes not escalating being a bad thing in the contemporary situation with Ukraine.

US aid has been about 3-4 months late and about 30% of what was needed at every stage of the war. 24 ATACMS were provided at the end of the Ukrainian offensive, which immediately obliterated about a dozen attack helicopters. Those helicopters were a big reason why the offensive failed 3 months earlier. Since then, ATACMS are being provided in the 100s, but too late to bring the Ukrainian casualties back to life.

The US could provide 1000 Bradley IFVs tomorrow. Instead they are donating 500 to Morocco.

What we see is a US administration that doesn’t want Russia to win, but also doesn’t want Ukraine to win. And I guarantee you that it is well within US power for Ukraine to win. If the total amount of money and equipment had been provided to Ukraine in 2022, the war would be over now. Russia wouldn’t have had time to adapt to each new small scale deployment of capabilities and would have collapsed. Importantly, the infrastructure of Ukraine wouldn’t need $300B+ of repairs. Tens of thousands of lives would have been saved.

No…we make comparisons now in the hope that the world will not appease Putin like Chamberlain did with Hitler.

If Putin is able to invade even one more country, then the system will have failed.

Yep yep, makes sense though. If Ukraine win it miraculously somehow by themselves, great, we save money and our foe loses. But if not, bleed them slow while also not inflicting the chaos that comes with an outright Russian defeat and needing to stress about all the unpredictables that might come with regime change in Russia.

Getting back to US politics, what is the daylight between Trump and Harris on domestic and foreign policies?

Never underestimate how much of this would be bid on by US companies either

Just bringing some levity to a thread hijacked into Ukraine PtB. Given your less than salubrious and highly emotional contributions over the journey, I’m not sure you’re the arbiter of what’s proper here, Charlie Brown.

Vance’s monumental capitulation to the MAGA cult and complete betrayal of his principles and convictions are more on point than trying to engage Nexta in a re-direction concerning ceasefire reparations.

Happy to discuss Project 25 or the Orban, Putin, Xi, Trump axis though, as I offered to several times in the same window.

I never paid much attention to that thing but it’s always interesting which posters drop in and out at certain times and share verbal traits and tribal rust.

This is not aimed at any specific poster but, in general, I would have thought:

  • Despots and dictators are wrong, democracy is right
  • In a binary choice, the one actively and clearly pushing for controlling women’s bodies, demonizing immigrants and minorities, and clearly putting corporations before people is the worse one
  • Sources of information that rely on actual research and investigation are more trustworthy than vibes from Facebook or Twitter
  • Accepting the results of clearly fair elections is right and anyone inciting an insurrection is clearly an existential threat to fundamental democratic values

I could be wrong.

You forgot, between sniffing baby hair (doctored digitally and quite a common paternal trait in any case) and flying to private islands to ■■■■ kids, sexually abusing women and indeed raping them with impunity then bragging about it, there is probably quite a deep chasm.

And just a daily reminder of what he is…’Nobody was killed on January 6’. Except one of his own cult was shot, but she was a woman so. And 8 others, four Trump supporters died in the crowd, police officers by suicide and injury. “I like his immigration pol….”

“ Struggling in the polls and charged with running a lackluster presidential campaign, Donald Trump faced reporters on Thursday for an hour-long press conference that swiftly descended into a familiar mess of freewheeling invective, outlandish claims and outright lies.

“Nobody was killed on January 6,” the former president and Republican presidential nominee said, of the day in 2021 when he incited an attack on Congress now linked to nine deaths, including law enforcement suicides and the shooting by a police officer of Ashley Babbitt, who Trump voters widely claim as a martyr.

Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, Trump repeated his praise of rioters convicted and jailed in the hundreds, whom he has said he will pardon. Absurdly, he also said there was a “peaceful transfer” of power after he lost to Joe Biden.

But he seemed more exercised by the size of his audience.

“I’ve spoken to the biggest crowds,” Trump claimed, in just one complaint about the media supposedly exaggerating crowd sizes for his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, at his expense.

“Nobody’s spoken to crowds bigger than me,” Trump said. “If you look at Martin Luther King, when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people, if not we had more.”

Trump was comparing his speech on the Ellipse on 6 January 2021, when he told supporters to “fight like hell” in service of his lie about electoral fraud in his 2020 defeat, to King’s imperishable speech at the Lincoln Memorial on 28 August 1963, a landmark of the civil rights era in which King outlined his dream of racial equality.

“They said I had 25,000 and he had a million people. And I’m OK with it, because I liked Dr Martin Luther King,” Trump said.
