Vance is Thiel’s man. Thiel is actively trying to destroy democratic norms and democracy itself as a governing principle and replace it with an AI-surveilled techno-autocracy run by and for people like him. Thiel and Vance identified in Trump someone who was as dumb as a brick and whose ideas if implemented would result in catastrophe, but who inexplicably had an enormous blindly loyal following. Being people who actually WANT catastrophe to occur, they realised that Trump’s following could get them where they needed to be, and they could just stand back and watch him destroy everything. They endeared themselves to Trump by kissing the ring and delivering dump trucks full of money to his door, and telling him he’s right all the time. Being extraordinarily wealthy, they won’t experience any of he hardship they’re so keen to inflict and n everyone else, so they can just stand back and wait for Trump to die, safe in the knowledge that all the worst ■■■■ will be blamed on him, and they can concentrate on setting up their little dot com aristocracy of the future in peace.
