Burger goal! We’re still in it.

80-88 at 22:22 in

Going to be a short quarter based on the score.

High tackle paid as HTB, onwards to GWS goal.

80-94

That’s what, 32 mins in the VFL?

HOLY ■■■■.

Huge push in the back, ump saw it as he unnecessarily called play-on.

Looking like a 12-point turnaround.

It’s a hard listen with the pommy accent.

How the ■■■■ was that not HTB?!?

Looking right at it.

■■■■■■■ cheats.

Fitting cap to the end of the game.

Flattering score line for the giants. Very good effort from our guys. And what’s with all the non holding the ball calls? Can’t get that whistle in the mouth quick enough to pay HTB against us.

Nguyen: Largely unsighted in first quarter after his impressive return last week. Great smother in the goal square in second quarter followed by his run from defence for a coast to coast team goal. This got him into the game and he was better from then on. Good mark on the goal line in the third saved a goal just as his smother did in the second. His pinpoint disposal has become a feature of his game and so is his run and carry. Should definitely be retained as a Cat B for the next two years because he can develop into a good player.

Davey: Got a lot of it early and used it well off half back but faded out in the second quarter and disappeared completely.

El-Hawli: Was very important. Involved in the play here and there early but gradually worked into the game and did a lot of good things. Nice set shot goal from 50 early in second quarter followed up by a snap (that he should have passed off to an open teammate) that also scored a goal. Strong mark and set shot goal late in the third quarter was important to get us going again after a down period. At times he looked a class above.

Unwin: Largely unsighted until he was ran down coming out of defence in the second. Quiet first half but worked into it in the third quarter and wasn’t too bad in that second half. Is playing further up the field to try to develop him but at the present he looks lost further afield. Looks a long way off it now but he has a good side step and good balance. Has good disposal too, so there is something there to work with if he can find more of the ball.

Gerreyn: Competed in the air but got little of it. Lacks a tank yet and lacks strength at the moment but is going to be very good. He moves well, has good foot skills, and a good pair of hands. Will play a lot of AFL footy—150+ gamer but won’t play this year or next.

Menzie: Nice goal running into space in the first and ran into an open goal in the third. Does a lot of selfless team things like chasing and harassing. Was lively and dangerous.

Day-Wicks: In everything early in the first but disappeared. I’m not convinced he was out there in the fourth so I suspect he may have done an injury and it may even have been early in the game.

Hoare: Marked everything. Was a star, but is sometimes loose because he backs his ability to read the play and take intercept marks. Took a heavy knock early in the third quarter that rattled him and copped another one in the last quarter. Continued to be important in repelling opposition attacks throughout though.

Scott: Everywhere in the first quarter and kicked two goals. Missed a gettable set shot early in second but goaled later in the quarter. Was very lively throughout. Easily his best game so far. I think he is still only 18 so if he can string together a few games like this one, he is a big chance. Is only small but doesn’t mind the heavy stuff.

Eckersly: Two early lead-up marks and a goal in the first quarter. His hands were good in the first half today and then took a big mark at the start of the fourth. He knows how to find the goals. Rarely does he play and not hit the scoreboard but he needs to stay involved more often. In his first quarter and fourth quarter he was dangerous, but did little in between.

Busuttil: Busy early and then faded until he got a new burst of life in the third. His tackling was good and he did a lot of important things in close. His best game for the season.

Brodie: Busy early in the first. In the second quarter, pressure-forced a turn-over that resulted in a goal to Scott then roved and snapped a goal of his own two minutes later.

Sellers: Competed well in the air. His good size is important in this team but, as is often the case, he started well in the first and faded in the second. He got back into it in the third and was generally good but faded again in the last.

Nyko: Usual tough competitor. Good to see him back from injury. Started well but definitely ran out of petrol after being out since he was injured in round 9. Could end up on an AFL list if luck goes his way but he will need to end this season very well and start well next year to perhaps go in a mid-season draft.

McKay: Always gives his all—nothing new here today, but gave away a terrible turn-over in the second. Is important down back though and wins a heavy ball.

O’Neill: Accumulated as usual but doesn’t hurt the opposition chipping from half back. His composure is generally good though. Took a brave mark at half back in the second. Had more impact in the middle early in the last quarter.

Hately: Always involved. Won’t get another chance, but deserves to be on an AFL list. He tackles and does the hard work, but also gets a tonne of it. Good inside and outside. If he was a yard quicker, he’d be set. I imagine he regrets going to Adelaide—should have stayed with GWS and might have developed a better career at the top level by staying at one club.

Monteath: Much better early this week after thrashing against bigger body last week but then Madden’s and Smith’s size began to tell the longer the game went on. Kicked a good running goal in the third quarter. Is a good athlete but needs to put on a lot of weight and he will do that when he gets picked up in November by an AFL team. Won’t be an AFL ruckman, but will become a better-than-handy third tall flanker because he moves so well.

Uerata: Unsighted in first half. Good tackle early in the third won him a free but he turned it over. Picked up a kick shortly thereafter and turned it over again but then started to hit targets and was okay in the second half.

Quigg: Surprising quiet in the first half. Good roving in the third quarter but his shot hit the base of the post. It was enough to get him going though and he worked into it.

Peris: Dangerous but fumbly. He has his critics but defensively, he does work hard. He chases and tackles. Needs to get more of it though and he needs to keep his feet. He slipped over almost every time he was near it.

Burmeister: Athletic but green as the fields of Ireland. Moves like a young Patrick Ryder. Will take an absolute screamer one day. Kicked a big goal in the last quarter with what was his first kick of the day.

Hogan: Got involved straight away but lacks a yard (or three). Can find the footy and doesn’t mind mixing with the big blokes.

Best: Scott, Hately, El-Hawli, Hoare, Menzie, Nguyen, Busuttil, O’Neill.

Hamstring, apparently.

Thanks for that. Hopefully not because otherwise it is season over.

…another soft tissue injury?

Great write up, thanks.

Sounds like SEH is overdue for a recall now. Is there any chance Nguyen could be our 14th debutant before the end of the season, if needed? I wanna break that record, we’ve come so far!
