Are we allowed to do signings this early? Thought we could only do it a week before the season starts.

This is VFL list, not AFL list.

Edit: yeah ok, I think I missed the sarcasm

A rival VFL club’s offer of a guaranteed contract was too good to refuse for one of the Hampden league’s star footballers.

Camperdown utility Hamish Sinnott has joined Essendon’s VFL program after spending the 2024 season on Geelong’s VFL list.

The 20-year-old, who won the 2023 Maskell Medal, played five games for the Cats after featuring three times at VFL level for Carlton during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

“It’s very exciting, I start this Wednesday, bit of a five-week block before Christmas which will be good,” Sinnott told The Standard.

“I’m keen to get back into it.”

Sinnott said the Cats told him at his exit meeting they couldn’t offer him a contract immediately.

They did however ask him to return to train for a contract before an Essendon recruiter contacted him a week later with an offer.

“He just offered me one straight up and it was pretty hard to say no when they just gave it to me,” he said.

Ready to take next step

Sinnott, renowned for his two-way running, is hoping “a bit of luck goes my way” and he can nail down a spot at the Bombers and play most of the 2025 season.

He feels ready to take the next step in his career and is comfortable playing where needed.

'I think I’ve shown I can play that high half-forward role pretty well at Geelong this year, when I kicked a few goals, got a few touches," he said.

"I think high-half-forward, on the wing, even half-back’s probably the roles I’ll play. I obviously would like to play inside midfield but it’s pretty hard with all the AFL boys who come back.

“I would love to play inside but I think just on the flanks, half-back or half-forward, will be fine for me. I’m happy to play anywhere though.”

Sinnott, a personal trainer, will keep Camperdown as his home club in 2025.

The new VFL Bomber will remain living in Camperdown and commute to Essendon training for the rest of the year.

He plans to move to Melbourne at the beginning of 2025 and find a full-time job at a gym.

I’m confused here, does it seem like we are serious about signing reasonable prospects to our VFL team? Did I join the Hawthorn forum by accident?

Wonderful to see a more professional approach to the VFL team. Early recruiting and coach appointments are terrific.

Must start to help overall player development.

What a change from the past…

This is great. Showing up the previous VFL managers as imbeciles.

Good to hear.
The next step would be to slow down the coaching carousel.
Four coaches in four years (two of which are no longer at the club) doesn’t bode well for development.
It still feels like a dumping ground for a failed AFL assistant coach rather than the other way around, but maybe it’s necessary due to football department salary cap spending.

As I’m not renewing for next yesr, I’ll unlikely be heading to many games, if any.
Feel like next year I might follow the VFL side and head out to a few local grounds next year instead.

Agreed, I wonder if a similar thing will happen with Giansiracusa. We’ve done it with tudor, caracella and you would assume tapping after next season. Stanton actually got a promotion.

Essendon VFL have received a further boost, with emerging talents Matthew Foley , Jack Peris , Solomon McKay and Mahmoud Taha officially on board for the 2025 season

That’s what iam talking about, foley is developing nicely into a player off half back and has a lot of skills that translate well to afl players

I’m shocked and stunned that we are actually doing this so early…

The article also says we have got Quigg.

The quartet’s re-signing also comes as the Dons confirm the acquisition of former VFL GIANT Nic Quigg for next year.

Does anyone know what happened to Taha this year? I thought he was supposed to be on the team

This is the VFL news we’ve all been craving the past 5 years!
Building a good strong squad finally and its still only November!!!

FINALLY we have competency when it comes to early planning and recruitment with the VFL program.

Huge steps taken this off season and we are building a great VFL list to match with the senior players. Will help development and give younger players some protection

Former Giant

Have they cut him off at the knees, or something?

Keeping them in cold storage at The Hangar for Zach Reid to borrow.

Good to see one off season without dodoro and we’ve already started by building a competitive vfl team hopefully it helps bring a stronger development for the afl team
