One of the young lads in my cricket team is doing a pre-season with the Essendon VFL. Played Calder Cannons last year. He’s hoping to be a guy they can call up if we have injuries during the year. Fingers crossed!

I find it interesting that Heppell has chosen to play VFL and not at Essendon. I know his time was up at AFL level, but surely his onfield experience could have been used in the VFL team?
Probably more money and perhaps a chance of a role after football
I think more than anything you’d just like a change of environment after being at the one place for so many years. Especially when it hasn’t exactly been a laugh a minute.

Yeah, and he probably lives around that sort of area too. Instead of having to drive across the city to get to training, it’s a 10 min drive down the road.

His name is Daniel Shepherd. I’ve not seen him play but he’s a wingman/half-forward, your pretty typical 6’1” - 6’2” running player. Great young kid. I think he’s playing VAFA somewhere this season, but yeah for an invite from Essendon VFL to do the pre-season. He had a decent season with Cannons in 2024 by all reports…
