VFL V St Kilda Sun 12.00 Windy Hill

Recognising he did better this game, the issue is McMahon has traditionally offered nothing extra, and struggles to halve contests.

We could still be on here I reckon

…wrong thread…

I don’t think even these “seniors” could go down by 175 points…

Yeah but I reckon he’s a little like gunston. Gets into space

i liked mcmahon’s game. good leading, solid marking, didn’t just stand around watching when the ball was in dispute. also liked seeing that when he went for a few pack marks and wasn’t in the prime position he was more interested in preventing defenders marking it, and was tapping it to ground for someone else to shark and get a snap.

But mostly it was great to see Gus back on the wing and focused on moving the ball forward.

Nguyen deserves a crack after a gutsy all in effort in VFL. Gus Clark is a ripper. Gives heart. Plays like Seany Denham.

I’m not suggesting McMahon is better than May, but it’s a bit harsh to say he needs it on a platter to kick goals. He’s averaged just shy of 2 goals a game, and about half might have been on a platter. I reckon he has a bit of a knack for being able to make something out of nothing. Ultimately goals win games, and it really doesn’t matter how you kick them.

An issue with McMahon is he doesn’t offer anything much without the ball, in a pack or when the ball hits the ground. He reminds me of Ben King without the insane height.

The problem in modern footy is that if one of your forwards doesn’t provide sufficient defensive cover then the entire system is at risk. We should know this bette than everyone else! That’s where I see McMahon’s biggest issue - not his ability to kick goals.

May on the other hand offers both contested marking and pressure when the ball hits the ground. He’s also a generally very accurate kick.

Anyone got a bad feeling that Nguyen’s papers have been stamped?

The fact that he is not getting a look into this rabble of a team is concerning. And we’ve seen this story before with The likes of Jayden Davey.

Love the kid.

I’d suggest it’s pretty risky from a list management perspective given our dearth of small forwards and defenders, plus we’re probably turfing Guelfi, Gresham and Unwin who play similar positions.

Can’t see it personally, but it also wouldn’t shock me.

Upper body strength is an issue for McMahon and increased strength would help him complete in the air. Defensive cover is an issue too as you say, but he’s not the Loan Ranger in that respect.

I think he’s quite good below his knees for a player his size, and accuracy is not an issue with him. He kicked 12.3 from his 7 games last season.

We’re stupid but surely we’re not stupid enough to cut a bloke that still has another year on the CatB list.

He’s shown some great signs. I’m going to believe they’re just trying to work on his forward craft
