VFLW - round 1 vs Port @ North Port Oval, 4pm Sat 19 April 2025

36-20 inside fifties…

We had the top five disposal players before Seton AshleyCooper Caruso.

Porter had 10 disposals in the last quarter!

Several were lasso frees, none were effective.

A lot of players went in and out of play. El Capitan was certainly not one of them.

After starting real hot midfield versus Geelong before fading and being sent to the forward line, Mifsud was impressive much longer today. Contested beast. Joint top for clearances (6) and contested possessions (11) with Port’s Molly Denahy-Maloney.

The three top disposal players for Port all had 9 tackles, with only Chloe Adams in range with 7.

She started slow but ended in decent form.

We won hitouts easily and clearances narrowly. Murphy didn’t really stand out, though.

Ridewood was easily our best winger. Not hard to do that. Made some modestly-booming kicks.

vanDyke was not good.

Bateman one of our better defenders, Ford got plenty of rebounds. Robinson invisible.

Pretty much as expected, apart from us losing to Port. Classic 8-pointer.

We don’t get to play FCFC till round four. To avoid starting 0-3 we need to steal one from the Pies or Norf.

If you’re wondering, the slowest players to kick a goal for us were:

  • Courtney Ugle 39th game
  • Alex Morcom 32
  • Georgia Nanscawen 25
  • Alex Hosking 21
  • Nat MacDonald 19
  • Amelia Radford 16
  • Lauren Ahrens 15 (her only goal for us, and it won us our first final)

And a belated 25th game announcement for Maddy Ford.

(In a row; Chaston and Davidge have played the same games to jointly hold the current playing streak for the team. They’ve got a long way to go to reach Kendra Heil’s 52-in-a-row.)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen COMPLETE disagreement by the coaches…

5 Chloe Adams (ESS)
5 Ava Seton (PM)
4 Meg Buchanan (PM)
4 Lauren Caruso (PM)
3 Georgia Foran (PM)
3 Layla Prince (ESS)
2 El Chaston (ESS)
2 Jordan Mifsud (PM)
1 Ava Jordan (ESS)
1 Brooke Plummer (ESS)

LEADERBOARD

10 Isla Baldwin (Box Hill Hawks)
9 Tessa Boyd (North Melbourne-Werribee)
9 Ange Gogos (Darebin Falcons)
8 Laura Blue (Williamstown)
8 Caitlin Fletcher (North Melbourne-Werribee)
8 Chloe Hunt (Collingwood)
8 Tahlia Sanger (Collingwood)
8 Sarah Sansonetti (Western Bulldogs)
7 Olivia Fogarty (Box Hill Hawks)

Amazing.

Yay, I found a different downloader that works. So you’re gonna get CBA stats and too many comments, ‘cause I really didn’t want to use the AFL video player.

QUARTER ONE

  • Took 1:11 for MaggieO to get her first mark… OK, she was on the bench so it was an uncontested chest mark and return to proper awardee Ava.
  • Lucy two short dabs to turn it over in the first 1:30. Odd as she demonstrated range in the practice match vs Norf.
  • News to me that MFord’s dad plays for the Pie Wheelchairs.
  • Oooooh, farrrrrk you. “We are currently experiencing technical difficulties”. Skip forward 5.5 minutes and 9 points to Port. One CBA missed.
  • Tassiopoulos doesn’t have a left foot (and the right foot was pretty wonky too). Would have been a nice play from Mifsud and Richo to set her up there.
  • I reckon the statskeeper was harsh on Porter at 10:10. When she fails to pick up the ball to kick the out-the-back goal, the ball clearly is pushed forward by her legs below the knees. THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A STAT FOR HER.
  • I wonder how many headbands MaggieO has. Today is a flat black, not a polka dot affair.
  • I think MaggieO is right-footed in which case that was even more of a gun left foot goal snap from the pocket.
  • Draw in the ruck but good ground-level follow-up by Murphy. She’s not a heavyweight but she is wide across the shoulders.
  • Little Ibrahim is willing to get into packs.
  • I know we missed a critical 5.5 minutes, but Caruso the only thing working for Port so far.
  • Ibrahim NICE tackle-and-roll HTB at 13:10
  • WAIT A SECOND. Ignore the commentary, that is NOT Ibrahim. That is Albrecht, who was correctly named in the team as #48 but is actually wearing #41.
  • These umps are VERY generous on “15m” kicks.
  • Ground announcer is annoyingly loud on the video as well…
  • CHASTON INTERCEPT MARK, repeat. Lots of MFord rebounds too.
  • Blondie Tozer is a really bad umpire. That is not a dangerous tackle near the end of the quarter.
  • Not clear if Tia would have made that mark had the siren not blown, but it was just one second late. Sigh.

I should have this done before tomorrow’s game starts…

QUARTER TWO

  • Port perpetually an extra player back
  • Prince is willing to fly in the ruck, but I’m not yet convinced she has any more idea where/how to place it than the grounded/wrestling Murphy.
  • vanDyke saving tackle, but her kick is awful.
  • Chaston loves standing on the outside of packs appealing to the ump for HTB. Didn’t work this time.
  • I don’t think I agree with either the commentary (dangerous tackle on Molan) or the ump (HTB).
  • FFS, don’t encourage that ground announcer.
  • Bateman being beaten on a few leads today.
  • For an 18yo, Thompson is a bit of a beast. Breaks two tackles and kicks long forward… Richo stuffs the shot at goal.
  • A second bit of nice forward movement here, ending with ALBRECHT not Ibrahim. We miss, though.
  • Chaston vs Caruso for a decent chunk this quarter. But Chaston and Thompson are generally alternating the centre contests
  • 11:50 that long kick should never have got past the multiple players in the goal square…
  • Ha, that was definitely a ruck free to Richo: nice elbow to the face.
  • Our forward thrusts this quarter are fine.
  • 17:30 I don’t care that was a downfield free (they were marking it anyway). I just like Albrecht’s zippy and aggressive approach to the game.
  • 18:15 decent swinging arm to the face of the grounded Richo there. That should have been a free 20m out for us.

QUARTER THREE

  • Murphy came into this third quarter with her left thigh strapped but no indication of limitation that might lead to her being out injured the next week. Prince took the first centre attendance.
  • 2:35 that raised knee/studs in the ruck by Denny-Maloney was a dog act, even though I don’t think it was premeditated.
  • Albrecht is GOOD. Sly mark in the pack, hits up the leading Davidge for the goal.
  • Ava gets her first centre attendance for the year, gets the ball, and … equivocates long enough to be run down.
  • On the next rebound from their point (start at 8:30) we have SEVEN accurate passes and marks. ultimately leading to Thompson 55m out. She goes for the long high bomb, and MIFSUD CLUNKS 20 metres out.
  • Megan went on to completely ■■■■ up the set shot.
  • Wow, that was a SOFT down-the-field against Plummer. The successful pratfall becomes a goal.
  • Ridewood can be a long and textbook kick (see closing seconds of this quarter) but a lot of her kicks were a bit wobbly under pressure in this game.

QUARTER FOUR

  • I was starting to think I’d been overly harsh and vanDyke merely had a “nothing” game rather than a bad one, but geez she gets beaten pretty easily in the opening minute. Luckily, Port fail to covert.
  • Commentator is not aware than Ava is, well, mini. Megan does not look much like her.
  • And vanDyke’s lack of clean hands at 2:30 is a worry too.
  • The lights partially fail at 4:20 in. Someone must have had different things on their mind then.
  • Nice contested mark by Richo. I am thinking she should be playing FF, rather than CHF, to give us a better chance of our long kick(er)s working out.
  • 7:40 Plummer was annoyed and expressed herself via Bromage. Justified free against her.
  • I don’t know why photos have not been published from this game. They were certainly taken.
  • 12:40 bloody hell, Port got some soft frees/goals. Worth two-thirds of the winning margin.
  • 15:50 Caruso elbow to the throat/jaw of Mini. Not deliberate, but ow. It’s a persistent hazard when that short.
  • 17:00 Plummer been busy this quarter. Gets it forward for MaggieO to feed Tia the goal.
  • Which Essendon player should take this lasso free kick? If you guessed #70 Porter you must have been following the game at the time, because WTF.

BEST: Chaston, Mifsud, MFord, Albrecht… I’m struggling to find the compulsory two more (and I note Albrecht faded in the second half) … OK, I guess Adams and Richardson.

Despite struggling to find a handful of BESTs, I didn’t think we were that bad as a team. Port were just exceptionally efficient at both ends of the ground.

Hey look, Gallivant arrived!
