VFLW - Round 5 vs Saints @ The Hangar - 2:30pm Sat 20 April 2024

Bloody De Angelis topped the fantasy points (19 disposals, 7 marks, 6 tackles, 3 clearances). But at our top… I like this new kid! She faded, but we likely don’t win without her. And there remain more key (non-AFLW) players to add.

The Saints were all over us in the 3rd and we didn’t have a response.

The second sister-brother combo to play for Essendon on the same day (after the Suttons last year).

Our 53 scores vs our opponent’s 32…

Round EFC G EFC B EFC score Opp G Opp B Opp Score ∆ Scores ∆ Points
1 0 7 7 9 0 54 -2 -47
2 4 11 35 5 5 35 5 0

5 4 8 32 3 6 24 3 8
TOTAL 16 37 133 13 19 97 21 36

With two goals in her debut game, Bailey Hunt claims our highest goals/game average.

Next in the rankings:

  • Fede Frew 1.48
  • Paige Scott 1.33
  • Arthurina Moreen 1.25
  • Renee Tierney 1.12
  • Mia-Rae Clifford 1.11
  • Sargent/Asciak/Ponter 1.00

QUARTER ONE:

  • Commentary starts by saying we are an “incredibly frustrating team to watch”… and then quotes a fragment of the scores for/against tally I posted after last week.
  • 3:20… yeah, that was not a mark
  • 4:00 :notes: it’s happening again :notes: ¬ don’t rub it in, Gemma!
  • Chloe Hunt 100% gets suspended in the AFL for that deliberate shoulder into G’s face.

There’s no free here. Here, there’s no free, alright? Free, no, Georgia? No free.

  • 12:45 Bailey doing more than hanging around FF kicking goals.
  • 14:45 … but she definitely needed to do that soccer strike to convert Manfre’s kick into a goal.

QUARTER TWO

  • from 0:15… you are not as fast or agile as you think you are, MFord! Stop it!
  • From 6:05: Chaston pass to Gaylor. Gaylor to GClarke. Gaylor runs on for the handball back and hits up Lily-Rose. Lily sells some candy, and kicks to Hunt. Now Lily is running past for the handball – gets it, handballs to G, keeps running, gets it back from G. She runs into our fifty, looks to the middle, and HartAluni is running into space. Perfect chip to her 25m out directly in front. That was bloody impressive!
  • Tayla went on to completely fark up the putt kick.
  • 7:35 Ella Friend leads with her head and gets it knocked off. Chaston not in trouble; the contact was entirely initiated by Friend.
  • 16:00 Melnikas marks then hits an unstoppable lead by Davidge – fast, arms outstretched, CLUNK. Tia is not yet 19.5yo, is getting plenty of centre attendances, can play forward and back, is on track to beat Crook as fastest player to 50 games in the modern VFLW.
  • Tia went on to completely fark up the putt kick. Three behinds today!
  • How did we not pile on the goals in the second half of this quarter?!? So many opportunities!
  • 23:35 @TaylaBlindTurn

QUARTER THREE

  • 0:15 five bounces before it turned left to hit the inside of the goal post…
  • In the following minute you get some good examples of how Gaylor’s skills will add to our AFLW squad.
  • 3:40 LilyBateman pack intercept mark. As I said last week, she is outperforming my expectations. Good on her.
  • There are at least three really poor frees given away by LilyRose in this game: she is later run down while slowly pondering what to do, one failing to bust the tackle early in this quarter, and now the reckless marking shepherd when we had it covered anyway. Commentary says she would have got away with the tackle-bust versus nearly anyone in this game, but that’s not the point: very often she would not get away with it at AFLW level, and it’s that career she’s trying to enhance by being in this game.
  • I didn’t credit Morrow enough during the game.
  • We had an insane number of goals and points and no-scores determined within centimetres of the goal line.

QUARTER FOUR

  • This is gonna be much less stressful to watch on replay, knowing we will hold them to one point for this final quarter despite conceding 11 inside fifties.
  • 5:55 Saints charges Chaston and comes off second-best (or pretends to do so). Gets the free. Chaston looks bemused when the Saint fell over.
  • 8:00 worst handball ever by Bailey ends up perfectly back with her, and then she pratfalls over the boundary line
  • 8:35 they were a lot of sling and otherwise dodgy tackles today. This time Nanscawen gets a free for having her head pile-driven into the turf.
  • I was a bit harsh when I said Hunt faded out. Is there right to the last quarter.
  • 10:55 loving Ryan’s game here. She gets to the right spots, she is usually an excellent kick, and here she just physically beats her two opponents. Note her follow-up involvements in the next thirty seconds as well.
  • I keep wanting to say “de plane, de plane!”
  • I guess 4.10 is accurate by this year’s standards…
  • Ump had a micro-nap at 16:00, and after nearly everyone conceded it was a stoppage or free the Saint breaks free. Thankfully, LilyBateman made the smother to avoid it going deep to their end.
  • 16:20 insert auto-stand-to-applaud.gif for the Davidge tackle.
  • 17:05 Richo doing Richo things, sending Guttridge off hurt, and urinating the other Saints off :white_check_mark:
  • 15:45 PORTER!
  • Commentary kept harking back to the VFL capitulation… but WE SAID NO. That last ten minutes we strangled the Saints.

Morrow, Gaylor, and Mahony attended all but one of the centre clearances.

Player Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Total
Gaylor 3 2 3 1 9
Morrow 3 2 3 1 9
Mahony 2 2 4 1 9
Nanscawen 2 1 3 1 7
Melnikas 2 1 2 5
Richardson 1 1

Mahony has more than twice the season CBAs than any other non-ruck (40 vs Melnikas 19 and Davidge 18).

Gemma also kept saying that this was going to be our first win of the year! I don’t think she watched our game vs Darebin

Credit: this is someone who has thought deeply about how to cheat… as long as Jayda doesn’t work out she can simply lift her arm to escape the “hold”.

Drew Ryan less outside more inside this game… and did well.

Amy Gaylor has caught her prey.

Bailey Hunt had enough space she didn’t feel the need to close her eyes while marking.

I hit the “enhance” button a few times, and it confirmed that not using nicknames on the board causes inaccurate scoring.
