QUARTER ONE

  • There is some pretty random player naming in the commentary: I can kinda get get Albrecht being named Bernardi when they’re not moving, but Ryan being called McDonald? Yeah nah.
  • MFord dominating early because she’s paying zero respect to her opponent, little debutant Lee.
  • BALL BALL BALL the crowd go, and after 12 minutes we get some paid.
  • 13:20 Thomson outworks their ruck Price on the kickout, and then has a pathological need to sell candy and run around her. Kicks long, TIA marks despite close attention by Kendall. Ye olde @handypoint into @sausageroll combo!
  • 15:15 good spoil by SammyJ but Klaumanns-Moller needs to be a better kick than that (or run another ten metres closer to goal before shooting)
  • 15:20 a Hawk is paid a free in our goal square because their teammate ran into them. They play on and Bernardi closes in, so the ump resets play because Box Hill.
  • 15:55 sFord somehow thought that ball was touched so let it roll out for a Hawk lasso free.
  • 16:15 Molan has first-and-only-touch and clear control of the mark; then the Hawk in front pulls it from her hands and is paid the mark. Crowd is NOT impressed. Commentary call it ”interesting”.
  • “from whence it came” gets a second use.
  • 18:20 MFord just extracting the urine with this intercept collection and weaving through a thick pack.
  • Cruel end to the quarter. It was not a blow-out, but the Hawks had zero offence and we should have been 2-3 goals ahead.

QUARTER TWO

  • Big 1-2 clearance by Thompson to start the quarter
  • Bernardi and Plummer not much excuse for failing to convert that opening 2-on-1 chance into a goal.
  • 1:30 the handball (shovel?) by sFord out of that pack was nice. Tia is then held for a long time by Kendall after she disposed… should have been goal #10.
  • 2:40 apologies Molan… that a was FIVE juggle mark, not four.
  • Had plenty of chances early in this second quarter; MaggieO falls one metre short four minutes in.
  • 5:10 Davidge totally misses the soccer kick, so doesn’t ruin her season’s perfect conversion.
  • After 25 minutes the Hawks are yet to make a deep entry (apart from Carris-Brett’s 45m goal).
  • Drew does slow chip kicks… that are perfectly weighted and very very rarely cut off.
  • MFord yet another intercept, and Thompson outbustles Kendall to mark. Lucy’s best moments are very very good. Good kick, better tackle 20 seconds later.
  • 9:00 Chaston pressure on the Hawk to affect the short at goal; then MFord-McIntosh-Jordan-Molan-Ford handballs are effortlessly slick under pressure, as is Ford’s chip to the Prince mark.
  • 9:50 another long-lingering tackle after the ball is gone, with sFord thrown three metres away from it. Ump says NO.
  • Pretty sweet clearance from the ball-up though: sFord on her knees makes two taps out to Plummer, to MaggieO, to Melnikas Austin through tackles, out to Ford and then Albrecht who both kick pretty neatly. Hawk defender Butler manages to neutralise Tia, just.
  • We have a wall up a kick from the play.
  • 12:35 Nice mark backing into trouble, McIntosh.
  • 13:30 Hawks finally have a deep possession. Started via a Porter lofted kick top the Hawks.
  • Being behind right now is pretty amazing. Yes, the Hawk defenders have done pretty well and the mids are starting to break even, but it’s been pretty much all one-way up to now.
  • 15:30 Molan intercept mark (drink!) but then Marnie gets waaaaay too ambitious and runs herself into trouble and handballs to Porter’s feet. Porter is not skilled enough to take it, and it sweeps back to a Stilve mark and goal.
  • Nice centre clearance by the Albrecht/Plummer combo
  • 18:30 You’d expect Jordan to convert this from 30 out, but she falls short.

QUARTER THREE

  • Nice kick by Bernardi to MaggieO, but awful execution by O’Connell trying to centre the ball allows ruck Price (not Prince) to kill our attack.
  • 1:45 MFord from nowhere to bomb from 46m out: the first bounce is great, but then it veers away for a point.
  • That makes it 1.5 versus 3.1, and I am reminded what usually happens to teams coached by Cherie O’Neill when these two teams meet…
  • 2:25 MaggieO makes up with her lead, collection, and composed kick sideways to Plummer. Converted, and we’re back in it.
  • sFord shoved out to the wing so Chaston McDonald and Thompson can be in the middle. Funny thing is, we end up giving up quite a few centre clearances without sFord and Melnikas at the bottom of the packs/tackling…
  • 6:10 Abbey turns the ball the other way from 47m out, and we’re back in front.
  • 7:15 If the Hawks ask, they shall receive.
  • 7:30 Wow, that is some A-Grade Bullshit. Lee is a very good cheat, because that was a flawless tackle. Hawks placed back in front.
  • 10:15 Prince really needed to start closer to Price there… that’s a killer.
  • Nice centre clearance by Price, but that free is mostly on the ump being gullible enough to believe Lee again waaaaay over-emphasising being touched. Luckily, they hit the post.
  • 14:00 umps have gone full troppo. We are clearly held and they are rolled. Ump says NO.
  • This ump does things differently; double whistle to indicate time has elapsed and play on is occurring. Every other VFLW ump this year would have joyfully called that “not standing”.
  • 14:20 Nice mark, Prince. But holy ■■■■■■■ hell, the slow high sideways kick is intercepted and converted from. FFS. And that will be the last goal of the game.
  • Bernardi comes in for her first centre clearance this year. This despite her being named on the ball most weeks!
  • Chaston gets the big kick forward, and MaggieO is justified in being urinated off when Thompson doesn’t spot her all on her own 25m out from goal. I think Lucy was just too focused on getting back on her right foot, and not what the situation was.

  • 17:15 apparently a high tackle is anything level with the middle of the bicep. The umpiring in this quarter is amazingly bad, and almost all one way.

QUARTER FOUR

  • 0:25 for Porter’s patty-cake attempt that she ultimately marks with her knees
  • 2:10 that kick is just not good enough, Porter. Zero pressure, perfect conditions; what should be a 20m kick goes over MFord’s head by 8m.
  • Shut up about them not beating us for six years, commentator…
  • 4:40 some yobbo is yelling at the umps for wasting time by discussing an obvious lasso free. At least this one they finally got right.
  • 5:55 BRONX CHEER! We got a free. Commentatory acknowledges the validity of that response.
  • 8:30 not clear how Robinson hurt her hand/wrist. Probably just by landing on it off the marking contest. She’s in serious pain for a bit while play swirls around her, but ends up playing out the game and we have next week off, so probably fine for next round.
  • 11:15 apologies to Plummer, it was a three bounce run, not just two. SammyJ wins the contest then misses her second round-the-body snap for the day.
  • 12:50 love Plummer then getting way back and aggressively winning the ball. She is then clearly tackled over the shoulder, but ump don’t care. Ump don’t give a ■■■■. Had a perfect view of it, too.
  • Carris-Brett then touches her forehead to the ground so that ump will give her a high free. Of course he does. Misses.
  • 14:15 big bomb forward by Chaston, commentator turn the volume to 11+ for Plummer’s drop kick attempt from 35m out. Justified.
  • Plummer is running like a crazy person this quarter, end to end. She gets a second shot within a minute, but again fails to score.
  • Bernardi busy this quarter up the field, but should have gone the 1-2 back to Plummer (still running!). Poor kick inbound.
  • 2.5 minutes left: HERE COME THE “balancing” FREES!
  • Take that back, Jordan probably should have got one there. So two wrong in this period so far.
  • Chaston cops a front-on tackle. Three wrong!
  • Hawk hatches it. Four wrong!
  • Harsh free on the Hawk, little opportunity. Five wrong, none right.
  • Chaston held, correctly called. 1-5 in the past two minutes.
  • Porter rundown tackle on the siren is correctly paid. Umps went 2-5 in those last 150 seconds. They weren’t the ones that mattered, but bloody hell.

Stats sometimes mean not-much. Porter is deemed second-busiest and is our highest for intercept possessions. You know why? Because she’s not near her bloody opponent!

That might be OK if you rebound well, but she is well sub-par there.

We have the three players with the most disposals (Chaston 25, McDonald 22, MFord 20).

Mietta Kendall the only player on the ground with 100% disposal efficiency. Was Tia’s main opponent, and while Tia was our busiest forward was not that damaging.

Stacks of defensive marks (Robinson and Porter 8 each, Molan 6).

For a change we won the tackles (Bernardi 7, Meklnikas 6, Jordan 5).

McDonald (6) and Melnikas (5) topped clearances across both teams. We got pummelled in the ruck, but clearances were still a draw.

On replay the game wasn’t as bad as it felt at the time. In the end, the Hawks deserved the win but not the margin (those umps were horrific in the third quarter). It just mostly hurts because a win here probably meant finishing top of the ladder, not third or fourth.

For this week, it’s pretty much a draw across the top six.

Best: Plummer, McDonald, MFord, Chaston, Molan, sFord
