VFLW - Round 7 vs Saints @ The Hangar, 11am Sun 7 May 2023

Quarter one:

  • The first thirty seconds were a worry. Luckily not indicative!
  • Ha, the heavy rain in the bright sun looks like a bad digital effect.
  • Some yobbo on Bullant Hill is still pretending it’s not pouring at 5 minutes in. By 6 minutes they’ve copped out and put up the umbrella, though.
  • Marshall, Bella, Clarke, VDH, and Ugle on de Angelis at various times during the day. We go better at that when we don’t play in the same weight class.
  • Clifford winning the contest on the wing just after 13:10 is the under-reported stuff that makes her valuable. She loves a one-on-one contest.
  • The picking of the free at 13:40 is just Dicker-hating.
  • Huta at 15:05 starts running to the right spot and rescues us from a dodgy Bella centring kick. But seriously, WTF was the Saint thinking?
  • At 16:00 it is urinating down.
  • How good’s Dicker’s tackle and kick from 16:20? Sensational kick.

Quarter two:

  • The only thing Dicker is scared of is the cold. Looks miserable before the quarter starts.
  • Very few players went for the long sleeves; Molan is one of them.
  • Look, it’s a slog of a match. Hard to say much about it.
  • I’m surprised someone didn’t camp in one of the dunnies with the door open: shelter and a reasonably high view.
  • I definitely didn’t see anything happen just after 3 minutes into the quarter. Hopefully no one else does either.
  • Clifford is dominant early this quarter (but not goaling).
  • If that was indeed a free to Burke for a push-in-the-back… um, ump, you need to learn the difference between black and white.
  • I’m not convinced Molan is an inside mid…
  • Huta legally send flying any 8:45.
  • The free to give Capsalis a shot at goal was… marginal. Luckily, so was her kick.
  • Clifford is our “get out of trouble” card again at 11:40.
  • Radford using her soccer skills at times. Right day for that.
  • At 17:20 it seems the ump looks straight at Clifford nominating for the ruck, and then pings her for actually being in the ruck.
  • Wales’ legs are massive levers. Enables her to get off thirty metre chips while being tackled, and more when not. She intercept marks then bombes long to set up our first goal.

Quarter three:

  • The three dodgy frees/non-frees in a row, as noted at the time, are still pretty funny.
  • Clifford gets commentary credit for Davidge’s and Chaston’s work at times.
  • Two massive lever kicks by Wales early on this quarter.
  • Clifford kicked in the right hand, drawing blood, at 8 minutes. It stings more when it’s that cold, too!
  • Ump misses the Saint just dropping the ball to the ground, and costs us five points (Dicker kicks a point from 47m out).
  • Legit LOL at the pratfall the Saint takes at 12:30 off Sutton’s push. It gets better each time you watch it.

  • Elbow to Radford’s face with ten seconds to go. If Radio 3DJR was sensationalist they’d be screaming MRO.

Quarter four:

  • It’s been a long time since Manfre kicked five goals for Keilor in round one of the EDFL. Contested mark and finally her first goal in the VFLW for this year.
  • “What’s a Stuber Goal?” probably not the next EFC video.
  • Ugle spent the second half basically tagging De Angelis.

I reckon Gallivant had trouble with the rain: only 59 photos!

Grace dislikes the cold.

GClarke stayed back this week, and was particularly influential early.

FFS, Gallivant… I said THIS DIDN’T HAPPEN.

Bella has been wearing that cushion the last two weeks.

Part of that Clifford spell in the second quarter.

A casual 25 disposals for Radford.

Yes, Gamble existed.

I agree with the VDH and Prpic demonstrativeness. The arm is still around the neck.

I lay tackles; I don’t accept them.

Goal #2 for the day.

The EFC report this week says Georgia CLARKE :+1:

Essendon’s VFLW resurgence has continued with a solid 2.8 (20) to 1.2 (8) victory over the Southern Saints on Sunday.

The Dons dominated the contest around the ground in tricky conditions, constricting a Saints outfit that struggled to generate chances against a much-improved Essendon defence.

The Bombers looked dangerous right from the get-go, applying a heap of pressure through the physical presence of Megan Ryan and Mia-Rae Clifford, but failing to convert their opportunities in a 0.5 opening term.

The second quarter remained mostly stagnant as the rain continued to bucket down at the NEC Hangar, but a late venture forward saw Maddi Wilson snap truly to give the team some much needed breathing room on the cusp of half-time.

On a day where goals were hard to come by, new recruit Olivia Manfre bobbed up in the final quarter to ram home what would prove to be the sealer.

Despite a replying goal from Emma Stuber, Essendon held steady to ultimately cruise to the 12-point win.

There were several standouts on the day, most notably Steph Wales, who was clearly best afield with 19 disposals, 30 hitouts, and nine clearances a great reward for her enormous work around the ground in testing conditions.

The team’s ferocious tackling was another highlight, Grace Dicker finishing with 19 in a monstrous outing – Ash van Loon and Amelia Radford also racked up 13 each, Radford providing a typically industrious performance through the middle.

Sophie van De Heuvel and Georgia Clarke also looked a class above on the slippery deck, plucking five and four marks respectively.

Essendon will look to build on their terrific form against Box Hill away from home next Saturday.
