VFLW - Round 8 vs Pies @ Olympic Park Oval, 11:30am Sat 14 June 2025

QUARTER ONE

  • Molan on Amelia Peck to concede mark/goal #1. It was a very nice disguised pass, though.
  • The excess markings on this ground are very annoying.
  • 8:10 the yobbos are not happy with the Pie elbow to the throat…
  • Orritt moves on to Carbone (gives away a free).
  • Ryan and Ibrahim, and their “direct” opponents, doing their own things on the wings.
  • MFord on Peck at the second mark/goal, having just moved off Chloe Hunt. Started behind and with the wind that made it impossible to defend.
  • 11:05 Just sack yourself, ump. Impossible not to have seen that one-handed throw.
  • Molan is on Peck for goal #3, but gets drawn to the ball and it bounces harshly away from her.
  • Ford the only constant at the C”B”As, and doing alright inside.
  • Peck beats MFord for mark/goal #4. I’m not convinced the Pie meant to deliver it on the right side of the contest, but she did.
  • MFord drags herself to the bench.
  • We went about 12 minutes with the ball in the wrong half of the ground.
  • 19:00 faaaaaaaaaaark you, ump. Tia tackle is rewarded in easy goaling range, Ava puts her hand up to indicate we are not playing on, ump disagrees and then doubles down on stupidity by not calling Ava HTB.

Collective manifestation of demonstrative demeanour:

  • For the record, since it’s not her only shocking call in this game, the name of the ump is Sarah Vanderschoot.
  • At quarter time, the player stat comparisons has both sFord and Carbone on 8 disposals and 1 tackle.

QUARTER TWO:

  • El moves into the middle.
  • MFord on Peck, with Molan filling the gap in front… which would have been more useful when the Pies were kicking INTO the wind!
  • Nice C2C for our first goal.
  • LOL at Melnikas trying to drag down Big Lump McKinnon – like the one lioness stubbornly holding onto the hippo.
  • Brooker is still forward at this point, but hasn’t been seen since those first three minutes of the game.
  • A draw between Peck and MFord
  • Heymanson doesn’t realise Layla went off… decent delay till she runs into the middle, and 5-6-5 warning delivered.
  • 8:45 that was a mark, you nuffie. From where we were the CLUNK sound was crisp and clear. Guess which ump?
  • Orritt gets slung to the ground. Trev upset, Vanderschoot don’t care despite him being directly in her eyeline.
  • 12:10 the twelve-point turnaround! If Lucy had held the ball she had space forward to run into. Instead… Peck mark, Hunt mark, goal.
  • 15:10 Orritt is not going to run into Hunt again… WHACK! Well, maybe she will… she got the free kick from it.
  • When Peck goes off, MFord swaps to Hunt.
  • 19:05 Our AFLW players watching.

QUARTER THREE

  • 0:25 the second effort by Albrecht is great. Pretty modest game for her otherwise.
  • 1:00 Brooker is a “genius”. Big shove in the back to the Pie to take out Ava’s legs and get us the free.
  • Ibrahim doesn’t mind coming off the solitude on the wing to contest at ground level.
  • 3:50 Vanderschoot gets another one wrong, albeit in our favour. That late contact obviously should have been paid down-the-field.
  • 6:05 Radford is catching up with our VFLW field staff. Between them they have one ACL, one this-past-week hip surgery, and one poor decision to wear shorts.
  • Hey, the good stuff is about to start! It’s been a pretty even battle since Peck kicked those four goals…
  • You can see the breeze kick in now, with leaves racing to our goals.
  • Vanderschool (correctly, but very belatedly) overrules a fifty into existence for the Pies, and then marks if off at 35 metres  . It started from the back of the 50m centre square, so :person_shrugging: on how you could get that wrong.
  • I think Brooker got (marginally) more than three disposals…
  • Albrecht really busy this quarter, but none of her disposals are working.
  • Richardson having a big quarter, well away from goals.
  • 9:55 over-rule on Jayda smashing Lennox. That was old-school Richo, and she thought she’d got away with it for a moment.
  • 10:30 TIA DOESN’T MISS! Accommodated the wind perfectly.
  • Prince the big clearing kick, Richo marks, Pie splits from their opponent to run the wrong side of the woman on the mark: fifty, goal.
  • Orritt now forward, for the first time in a while.
  • 14:45 Ambitious Pie handball intercepted at half-back by Plummer, Melnikas to Azzopardi, to Abbey, and she hits up Jordan. Nice pass to the leading Heymanson on the wing. Abbey has kept running, and she is picked out by foot. From the corner of the centre square she kicks deep: Thompson tackle, Tia collect, back to Thompson and GOAL.
  • All of the Pies players suddenly take an extra 15 seconds to get to the middle. Should have been 5-6-5-ed there.
  • Prince the immediate clearance and stab kick to Orritt. Prince keeps running, Big Lump does not keep up, and Orritt returns the favour. First EFC goal to Prince!
  • At this point I may have got a bit excited.
  • Jayda comes off the bench and goes to the middle, NOT as the ruck. Abbey knows her role and moves forward! It was a big impact by Jayda from relatively few touches in this third quarter.
  • WTF. Apparently we got pinged again for 5-6-5 despite being much faster than the Pies last time around… and then not punished. I think Heymanson convinced Vanderschoot the rule works differently
  • 18:25 WELL DONE RYAN. Runs back into Hunt (who had lost Molan), takes the hit, and completes the mark. Copped it nice in the belly.

  • The security staff at the top left of screen applaud Drew for that (remember that this means taking your hands out of your warm pockets, so a significant sacrifice).

QUARTER FOUR

  • Ryan came off the field after that late brave act, but is back on to start the final quarter.
  • 0:40 Repeat efforts by Richo stymied at the last second by a cruel bounce. Point only. I reckon Lennox crapped her dacks when the first bounce went straight past her on an apparent course to the goal face.
  • 3:20 Nah, that little dab kick to Peck was deliberate. It wasn’t 15 metres, though! Paid and goal. Molan was nowhere near close enough to her.
  • Jayda in the middle as a mid again.
  • I am not volunteering to be tackled by Brooker, even if I do get a free from it.
  • 11:25 This is the one time the commentators are astonished it’s a sling tackle? That was dwarf-tossing exemplar!
  • 12:15 Jordan and Thompson repeat efforts across recent minutes ultimately lead to the Plummer goal.
  • I noticed vfl.vcom.au placed McIntosh in our bests. After two good plays early in the game, it’s 13:30 in the final quarter before I remember seeing her again. I don’t really remember her making any mistakes but a game-low three disposals is a stretch to be in the bests.
  • They also failed to include Eastman in the Pie bests.
  • Ha, a minute later she gets pinged for HTB. Was an extremely harsh call, though, by GUESS WHO.
  • The tackle by Chaston on LilyRoseWill was called HTB, so reason to smile.
  • 16:30 Oh, Sarah. Great play by Abbey and Molly to get her clear and running toward goal, and then miscommunication between Ford and Jordan allows Eastman to lay the near-game-clinching tackle.
