We Are a Club That Like to Develop Our Own

I reckon he’d be top 3 in our BandF right now

NLM didn’t play for anyone else did he?

Wasn’t 2008 when we got Prismall?

NLM was on Collingwood’s rookie list and Pev was on Melbourne’s rookie list, but does that really count for the purposes of this discussion?

The problem with us developing our own is we pick players and try to develop them into a different position from their junior days with moderate success.

We have a better record than most clubs in promoting off our rookie list so that does speak to our development program, but failing with first and second round draft picks such as kav and morgan are costing us. As is the lack of genuine mids being recruited.

Developing our own is so 1980’s Times moved on and we need to move with it!

Very true. Free agency has opened up a whole new era. Club that rely solely drafting talent have very limited prospects.

Developing your own is still one of, if not the, most important planks to winning a first premiership. It certainly isn’t as important as it used to be for staying in the premiership window. But it is still critical to get there.

What is also true, is that supplementing developing your own with poached talent is also usually pretty important. We haven’t been particularly good at that for a while.

… ends very badly!

Goddard been really the only genuine person who wanted to come to this club. Everyone else has had better money opportunities from other clubs or outside best 22 players who were offered more money / length of contract from us.

Free agency means being able to approach players who are free to move anywhere they wish. Merely supplementing our list with unwanted players from other clubs has proven to be of limited value.
Hawthorn virtually bought the last three premierships by buying elite players to fill the gaps. We need to be chasing players who are proven elite in the competition.
Next year equals the longest period without a premiership in the clubs history. If we are to be successful again we need to re-assess our recruiting policy to insure that we have access to the best available talent either from other clubs or the draft.
Dodoro can do no wrong with most on this site but he has been in the job quite some time now and so far we are no closer to that elusive premiership.

Emphasis on “gaps”. The bulk of their team was either drafted, or bargain buys of players not yet proven stars. The only proven elite players they brought in were Burgoyne and Lake. That said, arguably Rockliff and another good mid would fix our major gaps, so I’m not against the philosophy. But I would note that Hawthorn was building towards that premiership for a number of years, and there was a 3, 4 year gap between getting Burgoyne and Lake.

And lets be clear - Dodorro had pretty much primed the list when the Saga sank us. We only had a few issues in 2013 in the side, and if we’d had the 2013 draft picks to trade to fill those gaps with the cache of (hopefully) finishing top 4, we may very well have taken the next step. Instead the saga bled players from the side, impacted the focus and attention of those who stayed, stripped us of vital draft picks and finals experience, and put a stain on us that would impact attracting players.

But only for one club out of 18.

So the world would think it’s mostly OK.

He was on Collingwood’s list before ours.
