Weight loss

As we are living in an apartment for now, I just got the quick sachets with extra protein until we get back to the house. It was the Vanilla one. Will add Banana. Yes it might be hidden sugars but will swap to rolled when I get the chance.

My wife said she will help with some overnight oats with chia seeds and low fat greek yogurt once we get back into the house in 3 weeks.

I know it might appear as excuses for the quick and easy but I am time poor so to whip up eggs for breakfast isnt just like snapping my fingers with 3 kids to try and get ready before work (1 is a baby) so if we can do overnight oats that I can prepare the night before, brilliant. I could do eggs the night before (boil and refigerate) but that wont be until I get back into the house.

I am taking it as small steps. Watching my portions and trying to develop long term habits while breaking bad ones.

I am coming from a rubbish diet situation lots of take out and just sugary and fatty foods. Not really portion controlling. Gone from a Medium shirt and size 34 pants to XXL and size 40 pants.

For me, just to eat greek yogurt now and having a banana or mixed berries on top (strawberry, Raspberry, etc) is a big thing.

I think a lot of use is via private providers (e.g. Mosh, Pilot) who prescribe GLP-1 agonists using telehealth services.

I want to know if you have to be seriously overweight or have diabetes?

I’m interested in the mental health benefits. If they are being addressed too.

I wouldn’t just experiment with the stuff. Might be a local GP chat. I wouldn’t spend 350 on a psych to medicine shop.

@Bacchusfox your missus is a psych right? Has she prescribed any of these drugs to benefit the mental health side of things they seem to address (when controlling hunger)

this is exactly what it is. you look different to their entrenched image of you in their mind. and first instinct is to go “something’s wrong”

it’s just a powerful appetite suppressant. it doesn’t actually do anything to your metabolism.

you get the exact same outcomes by just choosing to eat less and move more.

Well some of the better medication discovered to treat mental health issues have been discovered by accident. As a side effect. And from what I understand the science behind it really isn’t that well understood.(but some good guesses)

It’s common that for example people when they feel anxious eat excessively to feel better.

Literally “comfort food”

And these drugs seem to address craving for comfort food in part people report about how they think about them.(maybe less anxious for example)

Thats fascinating if you ask me as it could open the door to treating a lot of addictions for example not just food.

the only (and i mean the only) drug that is 100% effective for weight loss is crystal meth

if you reckon you’re an emotional eater, go talk to a psych about that and address that

otherwise any other treatment you use will be temporary, and the weight will go straight back on as soon as you stop it. unless you want to take an appetite suppressant every day for the rest of your life.

what about nicotine, you rarely see a smoker that is over weight.

Really? I have seen hundreds of them

nicotine is an appetite suppressant. it doesn’t make you burn energy.

I take mood stabilising drugs every day for the rest of my life for adhd/mild bipolar. Probably explains some of my more emotional rants on blitz. The meds aren’t quite got me on the level.

People take heart medication every day for their life too.

I don’t see why the anti obesity drugs in some form may end up the same.

If it works it works. It just depends on how much might help.

The environment isn’t perfect.

Medicine helps as much as talking, diet, lifestyle.(exercise and hobbies)

Its just not the only thing

There is significant growing evidence that The Ketogenic diet is having a very positive effect on a range of mental health concerns. Ie. Depression, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, bipolar, ADHD, Autism. Etc.

The diet was specifically designed for people with Epilepsy, and has a wealth of evidence behind it.

I’m sure it has. And would help heaps with treatment.

I’m kinda in the mind of macro factors which cause bad health.

So what is it about Australian society that means we have a big problem with weight and mental health.

The quarter acre block and big distances that means we have to drive everywhere all the time?

Since I moved to a very walkable suburb and no longer have to commute for hours for work my
Mental health has been amazing.

I have a strong network of friendships in the community, more time, eat way better.

The trade off is a smaller home.

But geez it’s been worth it.

Weight has dropped too.

Its the same as America
People don’t get enough sun
People don’t get enough exercise
People spend too much time on screens
less incidental walking, more time spent in cars commuting
But mainly its the food. We just need to eat more “real” food - fruit, meat, vegetables.

Doritos, pizza shapes, Maccas, KFC all staples in kids diets and easy to overeat as don’t feel full.

The other issue is having 2 full time working parents trying to keep heads above water paying loans and bring up children means they are taking shortcuts at dinner time as they don’t have the luxury of having one parent stay home or work part time and make home cooked meals / upkeep house etc or spare $$ to afford a cleaner like 30+ years ago.

I think this is the key to exercise. having a team whether your paying a membership at a gym, have a personal trainer, meet up with friends or group who meet for swimming / cycling/running creates an environment where you want to exercise.

If its just yourself your relying on, its a lot easier to snooze the alarm

My dog gets me walking.
One of my best mates gets me cycling when I don’t feel up to it.

Yes peer pressure is a good thing as well for sure!

As a single parent who works full time, I have no time to be cooking.

I just buy delivered pre-made box meals. There is a heap of good local businesses that do it. I tried the big ones like lite n easy and youfoodz, but they’re just processed rubbish. I had bad physical reactions to it.

It’s been really good getting pre-made keto or paleo meals…… with really good quality produce.

It’s expensive, but it means I don’t eat out or buy lunch…. So I actually save money.

Fair enough. But those sachets are really sugary. Fine if you are not on a diet and don’t need to be (or on a slack day in 5/2) but really bad if you are. The sugar makes you crave more. Switch to plain rolled asap I reckon, or just skip Brekky. It might be hard initially but you get used to it eventually. A sugar hit first up in a diet is like fighting for peace or f***ing for virginity.

I think the biggest loser got sponsored by cereal/jelly companies as a way to justify some sugary foods. Eat some of our poison and limit everything else and exercise like a triathlete. Never really sustainable. I bet hardly any of them kept the weight off…. Special K is the worst kind as they pretend it’s such a healthy thing and it really isn’t.

And then shortly after that, the type of people that don’t take joy in the success of others will feel some type of negative emotion (usually shame or guilt). This then prompts a response like the one the OP was lamenting to mask their inner feelings to others and to minimalise the negative emotion that they’re not able to handle.
