#25 Jake Stringer (Part 1)

Blooos have a tank that leaks.

It’s a bit septic too.

Can’t wait to pull ahead of those stains on the premiership tally. I reckon we can get three up on them before they’re even in the mix again.

Any new recruits tied to the fan and force fed shots, or was Judd not curating the party?

Any news on this bloke? Training the house down?

No news.

He fended off all training watchers.

Will be working closely with Skipworth who will be in charge of the midfield.

IMHO, Jake isn’t a midfielder and may only be training with the midfield group to increase his fitness base for the purpose of the odd midfield spell and 2 way running. Probably want to keep him close to Hepp and Merrett to keep things on track as well. I’d play him 80/20 Forward/Mid.

His junior years he was a midfielder.

Don’t know if it’s true but I’ve read somewhere that Stringer will be living with Skipworth.

What characteristics does he not exhibit that make you think he can’t become a mid?

I’m struggling to see many besides the fact he:

  • Hasn’t played there much in his time with Dogs. Out of necessity given their fwd line has always been lacking personnel wise. Highlights still show him impacting further up the ground a lot however, and perfectly capable of bursting out of contested situations / getting handballs away whilst being tackled.

  • “May” not have a midfield endurance tank. it’s an unknown, but whose to say he doesn’t or can’t get there. Frankly with the way midfields rotate so often now he might only need to be able to be a burst player anyway.

That’s it.

There is a reason Woosh said they think he can match it with any of the bigger inside mids of the competition. And others giving the Dusty comparisons.

OK. Maybe its time to introduce the term “stoppage specialist” in the context of Stringer. Whether its starting at the back of the square and running forward at centre bounces, or participating as a big bodied mid at forward half stoppages, or even being in the middle at centre bounces then going forward to make way for the true “mobile” midfielders, it adds the bigger body that we need and in particular addresses the lack of aggression and bold physical presence that has been evident in the way our midfielders have been playing in close. If thats the case he does need to develop his stoppage craft.

Can’t say I recall either Danger or Dusty mopping up in defence. They usually play between the arcs with stints up forward. Imagine that’s what’s planned for Stringer but what percentage of time in each area is up for debate

This.

I don’t think anybody expects him to be a traditional midfielder.

His strength will be creating havoc around stoppages.

Having somebody like Stringer around stoppages means the opposition have to put so much more work in defensively around the contest, allowing others to get off the chain.

He will make our midfield infinitely better even with just a few clearances a game.

That’s what I’d expect with Stringer. TBH I don’t want him hanging out in the defensive 50. We want him forward of centre, so I’d see him playing as a HFF.
But you are right, you want to play him to his strengths. Which is a burst player at each stoppage. Sit him at the feet of Bellchambers for each stoppage, then watch him burst through traffic. Then push forward after that.
