Welcome to Essendon - Jonathan Giles

It's probably been mentioned before but the irony of Giles being on Port's senior list for 4 years before he debuted for the Giants in 2012 finishing 5th in their b&f. He played all 22 games in 2013 finishing 9th in total hitouts in the league. Now here's a bloke about ready to hit his prime!

Good call Ms Morisette.

I find this post ironic. (In an Alanis way)

Isn't it laconic?

It's like rain, when you've got very little to say.

Hille was never quick but he ran all day unlike many others.

And he used his size and broke packs open, unlike many others.
There was about a 2 year period where we were ■■■■ and hillie got reckless, rubbed out a few times, but gee he cared and was hurt by our plight

He was a pretty smart footballer too. Made pretty good decisions generally.

Has a Bit of David Hille about him.

Except not as unco.
The hell?
Hille had great hands around the ground. Good field kick. Good mark overhead, terrific leader & a very hard worked. There was a year or two at his absolute peak he was in the top couple of rucks in the comp.
I'd love it if either Belly or Giles were as good players for this club as Hille was.

I'm sorry but he was unco.
He couldn't hit the side of a barn in front of goal and everytime he had a set shot you had to hold your breath and close your eyes, ball drop was Trent West-esque at times.
Was a great leader but he was an awkward player in my opinion.

Are we talking about the former captain and Crichton Medalist, who was talked about as a potential All-Australian at his peak?

David Hille was a legend.

Any Captain of the club deserves respect,  the respect that he obviously had from the playing group of the time.   Essential to become captain of the club.

Hills was sitting about 5 rows in front of me at the elimination final.......good to see him supporting the club still.

Could you see any of the ground?

Nothing but respect from me for David Hille.  Wish he was just starting his career now - would be pretty handy at the moment.

gave ryder his start

David Hill was a great Essendon person and player. No criticism warranted of him. Did his best for EFC.

Dude has shown that he can hold his own as a number one ruck. We're going to see a lot of him next year so lets hope we can add a bit to his game. If we can work on his froward game over preseason and get 30 goals out of him next year I'll be stoked.

30 goals as a part time forward part time ruck would be sensational. Does not happen very often.

20 goals and good ruck minutes would be great.

THE BIG SHOW

Ryder was one of those steady players you coud rely on. Someone who always got the job done. Yeah, steady and honest (with what he gave on the field).
Don't think he'll be as big a loss as 'we' originally thought.

I'll put the nads on the line and say we wont miss Ryder at all.

from both Giles & Tbell would be great

20 goals from either Giles or Belly is a perfectly satisfactory return.

Anyone at Essendon who manages 30+ goals a season is a latter day John Coleman.

Hird influential in Giles decision

New recruit Jonathan Giles has revealed coach James Hird‘s vision for the future convinced him he wanted to continue his career at Essendon.

Giles was traded to the Bombers from Greater Western Sydney in exchange for pick 53 in the recent trade period.

Speaking for the first time since joining the club the 26-year-old has opened up on his reasons for choosing to make the True Value Solar Centre his new home.

“Making my decision to leave the Giants was a hard decision but to come to the Bombers I am really excited to get here,” Giles told essendonfc.com.au.

“I spoke to James (Hird) in the lead up to making the decision and he really won me over in terms of the direction that he wants to take this club.

“I really wanted to be a part of that journey and where the Bombers are going to go so it is exciting to officially get to the club and now I look forward to the move to Melbourne.”

After four seasons without a game on Port Adelaide‘s list Giles joined Essendon for pre-season training before later being recruited to the Giants.

He became an important part of the Giants set up during their first three seasons in the competition playing 51 games for the start up club.

“The big guys, especially ruckman take longer to develop and I spent four years on Port Adelaide‘s list until I was a 21 year old before I went to the Giants when my body felt like it was maturing a lot.”

“I now feel that I have played a few years in the AFL and the body is starting to get used to the week in and week out rigours of playing AFL football.

“I am looking forward to what is ahead of me so I am ready for a big pre-season to get the body in tip top shape to get ready for the pre-season.”

Standing 201cm the South Australian has shown an ability to move forward kicking 39 goals during his time with the Giants.

Giles looks forward to forming a formidable ruck partnership in the red and black alongside Tom Bellchambers.

“All ruckman have to have a couple of strings to their bow and that is why I like to play up forward as well as in the ruck,” he said.

“I am looking forward to making a good combination with Tommy Bellchambers in the ruck and up forward working alongside him.”

Another one that has now shown public support for Hirdy. Suck it haters

Love what the EFC PR machine are trying to project but it's almost at the stage where I'm like "ALRIGHT WE GET IT, THE PLAYERS LOVE JAMES HIRD" haha :P

Hird making it all about himself again.

Also, I'd say that is a fair indication that Hird sees playing the two ruckmen together part of his vision for the team.
