Welcome to Essendon - there might be more last list spots…

I hope he has pace.

Waterman is a gun - I posted previously that I’m surprised no-one (particularly WCE) picked him up. Reminds me a bit of Crameri - pretty pacey and powerful for his size. I am a big fan - the sort of guy who I was genuinely frightened as to how we’d contain him when he played them in the Grand Final. He kicked 3.1 of their 6 goals (thankfully it didn’t matter).

Would take him in a heartbeat and be thrilled that we did (even though he’s from Claremont…)

Did he have a better season than the one Zlarke had before we drafted him?

He didn’t get as many hitouts

You get one choice. Schloithe or waterman

So 2 western Australians on here are “yes definitely” type responses. Interesting that he has barely been mentioned until now, but when mentioned it’s a big yes.

Anyway, sounds like there is still a bit of a risk regarding the glandular, but he also sounds like a good level of talent in a good age range

The son of dual premiership player Chris, Alec Waterman was a father-son selection in the 2014 draft, but was struck down by illness.

West Coast career

A strong-bodied midfielder, Waterman played under 16s and under 18s for Western Australia and was rated highly months out from the draft. However, he slipped during the year and when he was nominated as a father-son pick by the Eagles, no other club placed a bid on him. West Coast were then able to select him with a late pick.

After switching from Claremont due to the host club arrangement, Waterman performed well with East Perth in the first half of 2015. Unfortunately he was then struck down by glandular fever, keeping him out of action for the remainder of the year. He was dropped back to the rookie list for the 2016 season as he continued to struggle with the illness, which left him housebound and exhausted.[1]

At the end of 2016, with Waterman having been unable to return to the field, he was delisted.

Post-AFL career

After being forced to sit out of football for another full year, Waterman finally returned to playing duties in July 2018 with Claremont’s reserves.[2]

I expect Waterman to get the gig over Baker based on the role he plays. But i wouldn’t be surprised if both get a spot on our list with mozzies spot being a mid season draft selection

Think we have 3 spots available now that McQuillan left & factoring in Moz onto LTI/inactive list

So could potentially take both, and still use a MSD

Will be interesting to see what a little bit of Water(man) can do in our forward line.

Yeah maybe. I just hope we get it right since Clarke, Townsend and Crauford were pretty much busts

Do we really need another forward in Waterman? I would have thought we have plenty of players to play through those small forward and half forward roles? Or we go taller and have stringer and Laverde in the too.

What’s his speed like?

We need Waterman as depth to replace Fantasia and Mosquito.
Laverde is the most injury-prone player on our list and Stringer also seems to have injuries pretty much every year.

We can’t be relying on second-year players like Cahill and Jones yet so a mature-aged forward is a decent option.
