I always wonder about the role of China is mediating between strongly religious states, yet they are so risk averse to religion in their country - Anyway, the Bishop of Hong Kong will make their first visit to Beijing in over 30 years.

There was some deal done not so long ago with the Vatican under which China chooses the Bishops and then they get consecrated as Catholic Bishops when they visit the Vatican.
This, after a stand off when the Vatican didn’t recognise any clergy nominated by the State after they were allowed to practise their religion.

China faking it? Impossible…

Took that line a few times up one of the rivers, to connect from one line to another. There is another train line across the other side of the river. It is a great network, very efficient, reliable, cheap and also quiet. The residents of the building would not be greatly worried about the noise.

The US has strengths in pre-competitive Research and Development, much of which is government funded.
Could explain why pre-competitive R&D is exempt from WTO disciplines on indirect government subsidies in trade.
Could also explain why the EU was threatening to take the US to the WTO on its Buy America Act application to the Inflation Reduction Package, where most of the R&D provisions did not come within the pre-competitive definition.

Is there any point having nuclear submarines with conventional warheads?

Struggling to see why we didn’t put half a trillion dollars into drone aircraft, drone submarines, HIMARS / ATACAMS / Hypersonic missles. Missle defence etc

What this does is change the risk/reward calculus for someone attacking Australia. It allows you to reach out and touch someone, to strike well beyond your coastline. No other system we have can do that. F-35s would need multiple refueling aircraft, which would be shot down. Surface ships would be located and sunk by aircraft while sailing into missile range. HIMARS and land based anti-ship missiles are only effective 100km from home. We’d be a purely defensive military with no way of giving the opposition a blood nose.

Ukraine is in a similar situation with negligible capability to do long range strikes into Russia. It makes logistics easy for Russia and I believe that feeling of invulnerability made the Russian invasion more likely.

Blinken welcomed China’s mediation in the restoration of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
At yesterday’s daily presser, the spokesman for the UNSG expressed cautious optimism that it could assist in the Yemen War. There is no present truce, but the hunger index of the civilian population has improved ( seems food is getting through with reduced hostilities)
