When I bought my company in 2006 in China the average worker monthly salary was about 500rmb with Fark all legal benefits to be paid, now it is about 7,500rmb/mth and if you do legally a lot of benefits
You seeing that in people under 25 yo. We had a 23 yo graphic designer quit after 7 hrs work. Will go home live off the parents until he get married and then parents will buy them an apartment
Wow. 15x salary and other benefits is huge.
Are you seeing flow on effects from that drastic change across industry?
No not amongst the kids as I only work with chinese kids that have parents who can afford overseas university fees and (for some) overseas living costs.
But I also don’t see any activism amongst chinese university students so I wouldn’t expect them to start a revolution.
About 600 million Chinese earn approx $50 AUD (or less) per week. That doesn’t pay the rent in the city. There is still an enormous poor working class in China who are still enduring low quality lifestyles.
In terms of Chinese politics and decision making, what is the significance of the new Foreign Relations Law?
I get it that the Law gives more economic tools to react to events. Reporting highlights that decisions under the Law would be taken by the Communist Party, not the State.
What’s the difference?

I first heard of this phenomenon about 10 years ago, when l lived in China. l have heard it repeated a few times and l have no doubt that it is true.
It is true, same situation exists with workplace accidents. Death of employee is a one off negotiable payment to family.
Not long after l moved to China, so say 2007, l heard a snippet on the radio that caught my attention. They were talking about work place safety or lack of, and estimated that deaths in illegal mines would decrease for the year, down to an estimated 5,000. It was a more than sobering figure, l still find it a staggering thought. So many illegal mines, just like so many illegal fireworks factories.

Two things, not particularly sure of the veracity of either.
On my first tour of Vietnam in 1993 our driver pulled to the side of the road and showed us Cam Ran Bay, which had been a huge US supply depot during the war. It was easy to see why, it was a superb natural harbour. I was told later that after being kicked out in 1975, America was now trying to negotiate a return to the base, in a long range counter to the influence of China.
This point sounds even more improbable. I heard once that China was negotiating with the Laos govt. to open up a Chinese zone inside Laos. I don’t know how big this zone was supposed to be, but it was to be used to settle some Chinese in a new, purpose built city. When asked how many people would be resettled in the zone, the answer was 40 million. This is many times more than the total population of Laos, and the govt. fearful of being over run in their country rightly declined the deal. Having said that l don’t know what the sweetener for the deal would have been for the Laos side.
Make of these what you will.
