Not at all. A good example is the English women’s cricket team in Australia recently. Both English and Australian commentators criticised their performances. No one got sacked and there was no outrage because it was genuine sport criticism, not sexist tropes.
So do they have thin skin for complaining about it or not?
Or is it only people who are being racially abused being thin skinned?
Firstly, I am unsure you are serious about this post. The Australian hand wringing over the Sam Kerr case highlights Australia’s over-reaction to some matters and their exceptionanlism in matters of these kinds. Chelsea FC has imposed no sanctions on Kerr while she seems to have kept her endorsements. The Kerr case is like Sandpaper case where the whole country went into apoplexy over a team tactic, resulting in ridiculous suspensions, while the rest of the world looked on in amazement and the ICC handed out a one match test suspension. For some reason, Australians over-react to these events as if they expect all athletes to be pristine clean. Finally, Kerr was found not guilty by the High Court in London of the charge of racial aggravation.
Isn’t that telling you something. You have an English club who have no issue with Kerr, sponsors who come from different countries who have no issue with Kerr. Yet Australias and especially the media have come big time for Kerr. I wonder why Australia is out of step with other countries.
That criticism was fair and balanced, however, the cricketers displayed a thin skin, and one or two of the journalists are off limits with the team.
Whether you like it or not, his comments were misogynistic.
‘Misogyny is hatred of, contempt for, or prejudice against women or girls. It is a form of sexism that can keep women at a lower social status than men, thus maintaining the social roles of patriarchy.’
I think a cop dealing with drunks at 3am in the lock house would need a thick skin for all the crap they hear.
Otherwise I think there’s broadcasting standards that most people expect from broadcasters at drive time on national radio.
FWIW I think it’s a better outcome if you don’t sack someone who needs to think a little bit about what they have said. No one wants the backlash of “cancelling etc” . They just want humour to be on point and if you’re gonna be a comic you miss sometimes.
That being said apparently he has a heap of form.
You see that’s comedy.
Media come for Kerr? Please. The media in Aus tip toed around the issue in fear of being beaten down with the feminist stick. As for the international media, it wasn’t a big deal for a country like the UK with a population of 65 million where the men’s game is beyond big & woman’s football not so. Just facts.
Facts on viewing audience for women’s football?
Women’s EPL last season was around 15 million viewers I believe. Men’s EPL was nearly 4 billion
In terms of popularity of viewing audiences in the UK ( not global)?
ADD
Also, in a Matildas context, the UK viewing audience for the Lionesses compared to the Men’s National team?
Women are just getting started in football properly.
I’d argue some of the skills shown in professional women’s football is as good as a lot of the stuff in the 50s-60s for many men.
Give them time to catch up.
Us blokes have had a lot more practice - and a knack for sports gets passed down the generations (along with the culture around it)
I haven’t seen stats for the recent stuff but as a comparison the Women’s Euro final between England and Germany had around 17m Brits tune in, the Men’s final between England and Italy had over 40m viewers in the UK.
In comparison to British domestic comps the EPL has over double the viewers of the WSL but the gap is closing. What kills women’s football in the UK is the lack of promotion and more importantly the lack of attendance to games. Most WSL teams struggle to average 10,000 spectators in comparison to the 70k plus the men do. They need to really focus on getting bums on seats and memberships but it’s hard as all the news and papers all focus on the men’s game currently
Wasn’t the charge relating to alleged racism. Against a white male in another country? It’s the sort of stuff your average AFL player would get off with a bit of a giggle.
In comparison, the comments on Triple M specifically targeted women and girls, and was in this country, hence the media commentary here locally.
I’m not sure why you’re comparing the two issues.
There has been article after article, commentary on commentary on radio etc, etc, etc discussing whether Kerr’s behaviour should keep the captaincy of Australia. You are either joking or you live under a rock.
I posted at the time Kerr’s behaviour is common for people who are drunk. They can be booring and obnoxious.
Oh wow…articles and articles and commentary on commentary about her losing the captaincy…how brave of the Aus media! How about more chat on her behaviour…oh hang on the darling of Aus sport was drunk…honestly people like you are the reason people like this get away with stuff.
As you posted, there has been more than enough commentary on the Kerr case but you are crying because it does not suit your narrative. I suggest you may confront further disappointments in the future.
