Peeps’ll do anything to get a chip in

It really is a word, and acceptable even as a hybrid e.g. “ill-gotten gains”.

It would help if you provided an example of how it is being used (or more likely mis-used).

Two I can think of (and I can’t remember who) “he has gotten a few kicks tonight” also " he has gotten himself out of trouble again"

Both perfectly acceptable. More common in North America but originally common in English up until the 18th century.

Well considering the word comes from Middle English I suspect you might find it is not as contemporary as you think.

It was used in England before the 18th century but then fell out of use. It was revived in North American and Canadian language usage at some stage after the the 19th century.

It is held in disdain for being an Americanism whilst in reality it is actually British English word.

Google rules!

Now…‘begat’…that one’s a pearler.

On a similar theme, I overheard, “Are you saying my vocabulary’s no good?”

Well if they weren’t, I was.

My sister was told she had a good vocabulary when she was around 13. She replied ‘What’s that mean?’

Never lived that one down…

Verily.

I’ve always thought of gotten as a legit word, but only as a past participle and generally as ‘ill-gotten’

Kids walking around in adult jobs as if they’re adults.
As in,
“I’m here to pick up Duncan.”
"Did you want to have a beer with him?
“Wha…?”
sotto voce “Well get ■■■■■■, then.”
