85 was probably my favourite. Agree with @jonovdp and @riffraff that 2000 was a great year but there was the tension associated with the feeling that anything less than the flag would be a failure.

The end of 84 was the best, but the year was spent wondering if we could get Hawthorn. After the semi final we knew we could, if we got another crack at them.

85 though was just having the knowledge that we were the best team in it, and never really feeling like we were going to be headed. Footscray and North got us early in the year, then we comfortably got them both back the second time around. Smacked Horks in the SF then doubled down in the GF.

Well, yeah.
Because I put $20 on him after round three.

(I figured…how many votes do you need? 22? 24? Gotta have at least 6 already).

Cant forget 2019, one of the most insipid and gutless sides ive ever seen

Because of extensive video footage of early 80’s readily available, coupled with the Internet age whereby us old codgers can relate stories of Timmy Watsons & Terry Danihers on forums, I feel like the disconnect is lessened.
Even though your time periods are accurate.

One of my mates is a classic (smart arse) Carlton supporter. Every day at school in 2000, he just kept banging on about the 99 Prelim. Every week, he’d be like… “just wait until finals. we’ll stop you from winning the premiership again”.

I couldn’t wait for the home and away season to end. The fact that we were winning every week, made me more nervous.

edit. the week leading up to the 2000 Prelim, was just hell on earth.

They’re very happy to regularly bring up the 1999 Preliminary Final…

But hurry for the exits as soon as the 2000 Prelim or 1993 GF is even mentioned.

1999 Prelim is the death of Carlton.
The fact that they celebrated winning a Prelim, like winning a premiership, and couldn’t give 2 f*cks about the Grand final… that really put a dagger into the heart of that pathetic club.

Spring.

Fkg concur.
Susceptible to SAD, so Spring…yeah.

Most Carlton supporters cope by suggesting the 2000 Prelim result would have different had Kouta and SOS been playing.

Alternatively, you could be wondering if you’ll ever see a flag in your lifetime and have unknowingly picked this century’s St Kilda.

Its funny to look back and remember thinking that a season couldnt get much worse than 1997.

The last 20 years says, “hold my beer”

10 goals the difference at one point in that final quarter, eventually won by 8.

Whatever helps them sleep at night…

Just makes me think…goddamn we need a top to bottom clean out.

Nah but the 70s were worse though

Had they been playing, I think we still win reasonably comfortably, four or five goals. It would have been tighter though. Kouta was looking unstoppable prior to injuring his knee against us in the Round 20 classic.

Every time we played Port in a final we had massive injuries.
Feel like it was Always Fletcher.

(Or maybe suspension).

Does that argument hold up in 99 when we were without Hird and Lucas?
