Where do I get a large peice of wood?

I am wanting to get a largish peice of wood.  Preferably oak.

Something like 4cm x 50cm x 200cm.

I am flexible within reason,  but something like that would be good.

I plan to sand it back and use it as a bench top.

Just not sure the best place to go to source something like that.

Probably the best place is a timber mill. I have a friend who has a few slabs of various eucalypt but he's letting them season naturally, it takes about a year per inch of thickness. I have a slab out the back that I'm seasoning, it's a piece of botryoides which i've had for about 3 years, it's 6 inches thick so I've still got a bit of a wait.

Timber mills have seasoned or kiln dried so you can start straight away.

We have one over here and they stock a range of exotic timbers so they should have what you're after. Will also have the tools and finishes to do job.

You're welcome.

Jason winderlich has a timber recycling business. Called ‘just Eco’ I think. Look him up on twitter.

Great shop for woodworkers, but very expensive for buying timber.

I know it's got a stupid name but they specialise in timber. Cheap timber and in any grade you're looking for.

A large tree would be a good place to start.

It might be an idea to ask Licha where he gets his, rather than try to get from him.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd the first answer is a link to a freaking restaurant in SCOTLAND.

Also your link says one thing but the actual link underneath doesn't go to the AU website.

You could contact the Timber Advisory Centre / Timber Merchants Association in Blackburn on 9875 5000. They could probably give you a few options and point you in the right direction.
