Who is most impacted by that draft?

who knows for sure yet, haven't had a game as of yet under the new coach, so technically we don't know who is getting a game cos of being a coaches pet or fav.

all we have to go by is who hird has as favs, which again no longer applies anymore, well hopefully.

Or maybe, just maybe, our coaches have rated players differently to yourself.

3 out of our last 4 long term coaches have technically “rated players differently” to me, by peoples standards around here, where exactly has it gotten them the last 10 years ?

0 finals wins
3 we don’t want you to coach us anymore (whatever variant y ou want to run with, sacked decided to leave blah blah)

but no the main point was, people are basing their perception of who’s under pressure based on the previous coaching mantras.

No doubt worsfold will have his own favs come next year. So atm it’s pointless saying who is under pressure, cos they all should be, until they prove themselves to the new coach.

Which says more about you or the coaches?

I think it’s more likely that we haven’t had the cattle to be successful over the last 10 years, and of course the last three have been royally farked by the ASAGA.

Anyway, who are these coaches pets that you think have kept us in the bottom half of the ladder, and who are the guns running around in the twos that would have made a difference?

A lot will depend on how Woosha wants to set up the team and the development of any new game plan. l agree with Ivan re comments about SMac, he will not drop off, but will continue to develop as a competitive beast, and l could even envisage him used as a burst player on the ball, like Roughie sometimes does. The forward line is a tantalizing dilemma. For the first time in a while we have some players who look like they are capable of kicking winning scores. Brown will add to that ability, either forward himself, or going back to allow Hooker to to stay forward and continue to develop, or SMac revolves through CHF with both of them, to give the opposition nightmares about match ups. Edwards has the talent, we have seen the cameos, time to step up and show the world you are not a bit player, but the real deal on a weekly basis, the guy has all the star qualities, just got to produce regularly.

I played with the best 22 the other day, putting in the forward line everyone that had shown any sign of consistently being able to kick goals (or at least manufacture a shot at goal). So I was looking for shots at goal per game (as opposed to total goals for the season, or actual goals per game).

It didn’t make good reading. I reckon our forward line is an awful lot of hope at the moment.

I love this conversation. Really positive . We actually have some options now. Big fan of what Smack has done so far. I’d start with him, love his attitude. I really don’t want to see TBell and JD on the same line lumbering after small defenders. We had little or no forward pressure last year. Anywho I’m pretty damn excited about this playing group now. I say bring on 2016 season asap.

Thought it would be interesting to have a bit of a think about how the new draftees impact the current list and work out who's going to be working harder this preseason to keep their spot. New coach as well.

Parish will put immediate pressure on for a role in the midfield rotation. Jobe, Hocking, Stanton, Goddard, Zach Merrett, Colyer and Heppell are walk up starts which leaves guys like Myers, Howlett, J Merrett and Laverde looking over their shoulders you’d think.

Francis will have a few guys worried but I think the guys with the most concerns will be Marty Gleeson and Tayter. He won’t displace Hurley, Hibberd, Hooker or Baguley but those last two spots in the back six are really up for grabs. Mitch Brown places added pressure on Gwilt and Hartley will be a guy who’s nipping at the heels as well.

Up forward Joey is pretty safe but we have five roles to fill around him. Ambrose probably gets first crack at the third forward role and McKernan, Hooker or TBC will be the second tall. Dempsey, Shredwards, Cooney, Langford and Merrett are some of the guys who have played up there but none have really staked a claim for a walk up start. This is probably the weakest part of our team but unless they are planning on trying Francis on a flank I don’t see any of the new draftees putting a great deal of pressure on in their first year. Mitch Brown has shown he can play forward and the SA boy might play a couple of games. Yestin, you’d think, would have a fair bit of work to do but might come in for a cameo.

I really don’t know what that rd 1 forward line looks like tbh, still don’t know where we are getting our goals from outside of JD.

Ruck depth pretty much hasn’t changed, TBC, McKernan and Luenberger are all talented but also all have their weaknesses / durability concerns.

Who do you think will be sweating the most?

that David Zaharakis did even rate a mention in your list tells you exactly who parish will be putting pressure on. Don’t really see why cooney would be getting games either unless he is in irresistible form and Dempsey will likewise have to have an outstanding preseason to push past laverde, lanford, fanta in my eyes.

Bird and Berger also should be mentioned in this conversation. Tbell and howlett most directly in the gun for those two.

francis just starts at 3rd tall, get games into him. Gwilt is ■■■■■■ good insurance

my rd 1 team probably looks something like this right now

bags hurls francis
hibb hooker gleeson

stanton hepp laverde
berger hocking zerret

colyer smack langford
jobe JD Bird

BJ Myers fanta ???(toss a coin - zaka, coon, demps, parish, edwards, ambrose, mckenna, howlett)

Hopefully Zaharakis returns to his form from the second half of 2014. He’ll be a walk up start to the best 18 if he does and we’ll be a much better side.

That may be the whitest full forward line ever… but excitement oozes from those six.

Agree on your comments regarding a Daniher/TBell pairing. Even worse would be two rucks in Loony and TBell, and Loony resting forward when TBell rucks. Loony does not catch the ball or kick goals. He is a ruck or resting on the pine type. I don’t mind the idea of TBell having a spell forward at times. He’s a decent forward.

Like it a lot but I reckon Colyer is even more effective to us now breaking lines in the middle. Hopefully someone like Morgan can put their hand up early or Dempsey undergoes some kind of transformation into a forward machine over the preseason.

I don’t disagree. I was specifically looking for the best forwardline we could put together, and to hell with the rest of the side.

Dempsey (I think) is suspended at the start of next year. That really is going to hurt him, as it may be very difficult for him to get back into the side. If we are going well, he will struggle to make a strong enough case to push someone out. And if we are going poorly, they may prefer to look to the future.

Demps misses four games or three at the start of next year so that’s not good

Hopefully everyone is impacted and it inspires everyone to go that extra step to improve themselves and by default improve the team.

The draftees won’t play round 1 unless we have heaps of injuries or they really stand out in the pre-season.

You think Parish won’t be able to skip past Howlett?

Or Francis past Ambrose?

Even Morgan past Gleeson?

I do.

Never know how things might pan out over preseason.

Does Zaharakis still play for us?

BREAKOUT YEAR

ANZAC day specialist.

mark my words mckernan will be best 22 all year.

wheather that’s resting ruck or forward target.

Strange how you put ahead guys like ashby, hams ect before someone that has actually showed something

he got off the rookie list and onto the seniors excellent effort.

i would put my leftie on that hams will never make it off the rookie list and is destined for delisting.

Well, with the scope for movement in the “unless” that you threw into your statement, it isn’t surprising.

That pig will be able to fly, unless gravity becomes a becomes an issue, or he needs wings to do so.

Parish and Howlett are different type of players. They spoke of run and spread re: Parish’s game. Howlett is in and under.

Morgan will start in the VFL and Gleeson will get his chance. We are all hoping for the 1st year players to develop quickly, but it aint going to happen for all of them. And I am hoping to see Gleeson really develop and step up this year as he has got pacel, skill and hopefully more strength come round 1. People complained he was played the full year last year but I think it will do his development the world of good and we will see the benefits this year.

When up against the tough seasoned bodies of AFL players most 1st year players struggle. The step up to VFL level is quite big, let alone AFL.
