Wildcards (top 10) for 2026 AFL finals

I hope the 10th team wins the flag.

Tons of fun.

So we are now the new 11thington

Belatedly-sacked fool Brian Taylor has taken to facebook, telling everyone that this stupid decision is somehow the fault of ā€˜woke’.

Dumbest. Timeline.

Has BT really been sacked? That’s some own goal

B.t sacked?

I had THOUGHT he got future endeavoured at the end of the season after his long-time protector at the network got the arse. It wasnt framed as a sacking from the broadcast, more a reshuffle of deck chairs. Although admittedly I didn’t watch much footy for the last half of last season for obvious reasons, so I might have misinterpreted or misunderstood.

If I’m wrong, then I’m both sorry for spreading false hope, and deeply disappointed.

Its going to be a 19 team competition, this needed to happen. What’s not a good idea is the expansion of the AFL. Should of just kept it as it was. Although i’m sure people said the same thing when the VFL merged lol

Sorry to be a pedant, but it’s should have not should of as so many posters write these days. Does my head in

Whilst I agree with the sentiments, it was a BT parody account, which admittedly can be difficult to differentiate from the genuine article…

Screw development. If everything goes right for us, 10th is within reach. All in baby!

Yep, the position doesn’t matter now, the only key thing is that we need to be playing great footy at the end of the season…

This change was inevitable.
It will not help parity across the league. It never will.
It will not stop teams from tanking. It never will.

But it’ll make games a little more interesting towards the end of the season and the two extra ā€˜wildcard’ finals will also get attention. And that equals more money at the expense of two more games leading into the finals. It totally makes financial sense.

It would be great if they just call it what it is. Which is a top 10 finals. But there’s probably some contract clauses that won’t allow that to occur. That’ll include player, stadium and other obscure contracts.

The weird part about all this is that a win during wildcard weekend won’t be considered a finals win. Regardless of whether it’s 7th or 8th winning or 9th or 10th winning. It’ll be discredited.

Weirdly, I think this opens up more opportunities for teams finishing 5th and 6th to progress further in finals. They will have the one week break and are a good chance to have an ā€˜eaasier’ finals win leading into the next week of finals against the top 4 teams.

One thing of interest…
When they were reporting it during the week, it was mentioned that it gives fans more hope in making finals so they don’t ā€˜dissengage’ late in the season. I then thought of how people on this forum would react if it were late in the season and we were ā€˜pushing for 10th’. The amount of shitposting in the six weeks leading up to it would be insufferable.
When making those kind of statements, they are ignoring typical forum and social media sentiment. It’ll be interesting to see if it increases game attendance during the normal season.

Imagine finishing 8th on 13 wins and being knocked out by some plonker that finished on ten wins. You’d be filthy.

You’d probably be Essendon

Isn’t that for the AFL to decide?

I don’t think it’s a good idea but I really don’t get the outrage. Final 8 isn’t something that’s been around forever. It’ll likely have a marginal impact on who wins the GF. If anything it gives more of an advantage to better teams. I don’t have the energy to get angry about it TBH.

We’ll henceforth be known as 11ndon

I’ll probably change my tune when we lose to 10th next year.

I meant more from fans than AFL.
AFL will count it as a win. Not sure if it’ll statistically it’ll be a ā€˜finals’ win. We’ll have to wait and see how AFL tables handles the result.
They could do what the NBA do which is the statistics don’t count at all towards a player or a team. Not towards playoff records or regular season records.

I’m not expecting it to get Brownlow votes.
I doubt it’ll count towards the Coleman medal.

It’s just in no-mans land because it’s not called a final and it’s not called a regular season game. So there’s enough of a gap for fans to overreact to things.
