Work From Home - So popular, it's now an acronym

I have my 20 year service anniversary in September. Wtf. How did this happen?

From memory nearly all IT workers are pretty much excluded from awards and stuff, too.
Such a dogshit industry.

Been to 2 work events in 2 years.

Both times I’ve ended up a ‘close contact’ and had to either isolate or watch for symptoms.

Sure, get back to the office, but it’s still the place I’m
Most likely to catch covid.

There’s lots of IT where the pay is well above award wage.

What sort of IT jobs are paying under it?

Historically, some QA/testing jobs, plus tech-adjacent jobs like tech support call centres of course. But not much on the technical side these days. Skill shortages are serious and lots of money is being thrown around.

Thinking about testers makes me twitch.

“It was working fine yesterday…”

I don’t understand this meme, but given the context it seems appropriate.

Pay is one thing, awards also cover conditions.

Plenty of BS hours, entitlements etc.

If your paid well it’s because of bullshit hours and entitlements etc thought right?

I mean if you know a well paid job with great hours and entitlements, sign me up!

(It’s probably down our wharves)

Mind you if you wanna own a house these days nothing pays really well anymore. (Cept the usual jobs for the very few)

i’m one of the rare type for who salary isn’t everything. i’ve been working from home before it was cool.

with my skillset and experience i could easily be earning double what i’m currently earning, but then i’d probably have to have an office, a commute, set hours, useless meetings and slide decks, and a whole bunch of other garbage i don’t want to deal with.

if i were to be headhunted away i’d be demanding way more “flexibility” in exchange for a lower salary, but it would probably do some heads in. “nooooooooo you have to be online 9-5!!!”

but again, i’m an outlier.

You mean you don’t want to be in an environment you’re not suited to and chase the dollars an literally be so out of your depth you’re ruining other people’s lives?

Barnz you’re so bitter you haven’t been promoted to middle management yet.

Sounded like a very experienced comment. Mirrors my experience anyway. In fact the more out of my depth I am the more accolades I get. Currently I’m an unlicenced Balinese tour operator, it’s going very well.

Sometimes it’s not a matter of being out of your depth but simply that despite the money the job might not interest you. I could easily get the same money I’m on now but for half the hours to switch to a executive job at my work either here or interstate but the office work and constant meetings just doesn’t interest me in the slightest. I’d rather stay in hands on management and work the extra hours as I actually enjoy it.

I’ve seen way too many people in mnagent or leadership roles that are completely out of their depth and their inability to manage people WFH has lead to forcing them into the office for most of the week and mass attrition of staff.

But on a personal note i ran a team for 6 months and we performed quite well but it was absolutely not for me. I lost any semblance of a work/ life balance so decided to find a new role in the org. Much happier now. Absolutely miss the extra dollars but being able to do my time as needed then clock out unless I want to do some ot is absolutely my go.

My motivation at work is continuously learning enough new skills to maintain a decent wage, not get bored with what I’m doing but also to ensure I am employable until I choose to retire.

WFH isn’t an acronym, it’s an initialisation.

Acronyms are things like NATO, scuba, laser. Even LOL is an acronym.
