If I was your girlfriend. Not the best Prince song, but my favorite, because no other artist would even attempt a track like that, let alone pull it off as brilliantly as he did.

And that version of Nothing Compares to you is great - staggering that he gave it away. But he was a strange cat. (He was also giving away Kiss at one stage, but changed his mind).

When Doves,Cry , Cream , Erotic city , My name is Prince, Let’s go crazy and Batman are probably in my top 6 , but geeze there are so many to choose from that it is hard to rate them against each other . If anyone has the right to be referred to by the term Elite ,then it is Prince. Would have turned 63 tomorrow.

  1. Purple Rain. If it is good enough to inspire an entire movie,* it is good enough for me, IRC correctly there is a slightly different version in the actual movie to the one on the album. The version in the movie has a slightly different and better ending, without the strangled vocals as it fades out.
    *Not a good movie.

His guitar playing on the track above is all flash and crash, it disregards and is at complete odds with the beauty of the song it is featured in. He is a great guitarist, just chose the wrong material to highlight his musical pyrotechnics.

Just to clarify the thread title and what you are asking, Wimmera1. When you say Your favourite Prince song , are you referring to songs he performed or just songs he wrote ? My Guitar gently weeps was written by George Harrison and part performed by Prince ,but he did the tribute really well. Nothing Compares to you was written and originally performed by Prince ,but Sinead topped the charts with her version of it. Doves ,1999,Purple Rain, Corvette etc were both written and performed by Prince and were all hits for the purple one himself. Or are we talking about anything with Princes’ name stamped on it ? Great thread by the way .

Edit: I don’t want to have a go at anyone’s personal choice.
And it’s not a bad song by any stretch.
It’s just to me every other song on the album is better.

It’s seriously one of my favorites - partly it’s weirdness that I love. I am or was a Prince obsessive. For three years of my teens I didn’t put anything in the tape player that wasn’t a Prince album. My bedroom was a shrine to him… looking back it’s a bit scary. Anyway all the songs I listed are legit in my favorites.

Easier to list my least favorites probably, but it’s such a huge catalogue as well.

If I had to limit it would be a Dorothy Parker, Computer Blue tie.

Yep… exactly I’ve listened to it thousands of times and it still gives me shivers. Almost my favorite minute of music ever.
